i need help! upon replacing the sunvisor supports in my 68 conv. i found one of the holes in the windshield frame had the threading stripped. being only 2 screws hold these things on, i figure i need them both. i can't see any way to get to the hole from the top to put any kind of nut in there. has anybody else had this problem? if so, what did you do about it? any input will be greatly appreciated.

Just a thought: maybe one of those plastic inserts that you use for putting screws in drywall would work? Just drill the hole big enough to put the insert in; the screw will keep it tight and it would be reusable.

Wrap a heavy gauge copper wire around the screw, something like a 16 or 18 gauge solid conductor. It will act as a helicoil and its soft enough to bite into the edge of the hole and the screw.

Another good trick is a product used for wood screws that stripped the hole in the wood. It's real thin metal 1/2X2 in. with sharp perforations in it. Just take some snips and cut a thin piece. Then put it in the hole and bend it over the edge to hold it then screw away.

Mark,
That sounds interesting. Just want to clarify, after i wrap the screw, how do i get it to start threading?
Thanks,
Tybor

It will just screw in using the wire as the new thread. Wrap the wire neatly around the screw threads starting in the tapered section of the screw and kee wrapping all the way to just below the head, or just under the visor support if it wont fit through the hole in the support. Just don't use to big a wire or you won't be able to get it into the hole in the windsheild frame, you should still be able to see the screw threads between the wire that is wrapped into the threads, you just trying to increase the diamter of the screw slightly.

Thanks Mark,
I think that just might work.
