View Full Version : 67 Window Molding Clip Retainers
deejaygee Feb 14th, 03, 10:27 AM Due to rust repair, I'm missing several rear window channel 'studs' used to support the clips for the window moldings.
So, does anyone have their rear window out (my car is a 67 coupe) in order to count how many studs are used, especially along the top, and the distance between them?
I remember seeing this information in a posting several weeks ago but after searching and searching, I can't find it.

click Feb 14th, 03, 10:33 AM deejay Im about to order some of those same things. I found them in Ricks. They are a screw in phillips head screw. They are used in rear, front and also for vinyl top clips too. Im not sure if your 67 is different than my 69 but Ive not measured distances either. It should be obvious where they 'used to be' with holes or at minimum, equi-distant as measured by others that are still there. You can have more than you need with no harm as well. Hope this helps.
1967 Panther Feb 14th, 03, 12:39 PM My 68 has 7 accross the top and are about 7" apart. Remeber, no 2 cars has the EXACT same distances because the pins were installed after.
Eastwood makes a tool that installs a pin EXACTLY like the original one..the pins are cheap but the tool is arount 300 bucks. It's a stud gun for pulling dents but there is a pin istall adapter.
deejaygee Feb 14th, 03, 02:55 PM I counted twelve pins along the bottom, two on each side. Kinda weird that there's only seven on top? Anyone else have a count for the top row?
I have the screw-in studs from Eastwood, ten in the kit.
There's no sign of the old stud locations along the top as that area has new metal and paint on it now.
click Feb 14th, 03, 04:22 PM Counted mine this evening, 13 across top, 3 down the sides and 10 across bottom.
The seperations varied from 3 to 4 inches and not exactly on an inch mark, Guess the general was not to worried since you dont see them from exterior.

Unreal Feb 14th, 03, 05:26 PM I just went out to count mine. 7 across the top, two on each side and "none" on the bottom!!! I never noticed before. I bought a dozen screw in type a couple of years ago, just because they were cheap. I guess I need them http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif

deejaygee Feb 14th, 03, 08:47 PM 7 on top, 2 on each side, 12 on the bottom. Thanks guys. Gotta love this site!
CReM@$TeR Feb 15th, 03, 03:59 AM Well, I just took the window out of mine a few weeks ago. My car had an original vinyl top, and I have 7 across the top, two on each side, and only 8 on the bottom, instead of 12. They are all evenly spaced, so it doesn't look like any are missing, and mine is relatively rust free with exception of the top right corner. Does this mean they used less studs on the vinyl top cars?

deejaygee Feb 15th, 03, 09:47 AM While we're on the subject, does anyone have any experience installing those little sheet metal screw replacement stud thingies from Rick's? Should I drill a little hole first? Should I mask off the area to avoid paint cracking? Should I punch a little guide hole?
mwc67 Feb 15th, 03, 11:40 AM I just installed mine this week. Put your clip flat against the side and mark the hole then drill. Use some dumb-dumd over the hole then install the screw with the clip.
You can look at the back of the trim to see where the old clips were.
I used the black long clips in the rear and they worked great. Now the fronts I got were the green ones and they wouldn't hold anything(these were the dark green ones, the lighter green ones worked). I ended up reuseing the old clips on the front.
There were 2 on the sides and seven top 12 bottom. Mine was a vinyl top but I left it off.
Good luck

HwyStarJoe Feb 15th, 03, 04:06 PM Matt,
I'm glad you said that about the light green clips! I have a bagfull in the garage so now I guess I won't have to worry come trim time.
Thanks http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif

click Feb 17th, 03, 04:37 AM I counted the front glass pins for the heck of it, 13 across the top, 3 down each side, of course none on the bottom. I had an assortment of those clips, some green, light green and black. A hodpodge for sure. My body paint store has bags of all the type of clips in stock so I might buy an assortment to see what works, thanks for the tip with the dumb dumb too. :D
Unreal Feb 17th, 03, 05:31 AM I pulled out the "kits" I got from D&R.
Rear
18 sort of "D" shaped clip that slides down over the pin. (silver)
4 rectangular clips with angled slot (light green)
Front
13 "D" shaped (silver)
6 rectangular clips with angled slot (red)
The red and light green differ slightly where the part the the chrome clips over.
Since I have 3 pins on each front pilar (6 total), and 2 on each side in the back (4 total) I would guess that the rectangular clips go on the sides, and the "D" clips go everywhere else.
I also have 2 "D" shaped in dark olive green, and 2 "D" shaped in dark blue. I studied these next to the silver ones, and I cannot tell a difference. I have no clue what they are for.
If you look in Rick's catalog, They call for 13 red rectangular on the front, and 20 sliver "D" clips on the rear. That conflicts with D&R.
Anyone know how to solve the riddle?
click Feb 17th, 03, 12:33 PM I spent 30 min. this afternoon paging thru a catalog at my auto paint store. Their fastener company has hardboard flip pages with every type of fastener you can imagine. The trim clips to hold the chrome trim around the windows can be bought for $10 a box of 50, compared to $8.95 for 20 of them in catalogs. The one item not available other than in catalog are the locating studs and pal nuts. Their supplier had similar ones but not a match at all.
Thought Id pass this along so the thread has the info. for others later who do a search.
