I just recieved the July 2006 issue of Victory Lane magazine, it's a vintage race mag.
On the cover is a photo of the pace lap of the first Can-Am race at Road America in 1967, a red 1967 Camaro SS/RS convertable is pacing the Can-Am cars! The odd thing is, the convertable has a hood mounted tach like a Firebird, it also has bullet mirrors, a plexiglass hood "scoop" and rectangular driving lights.
Here is a pic of the lower section of the cover:

An interesting car. It would be neat to have a red convertable pacing the grid for the 40th anneversary race this July at RA!
Anyone want to volunteer?

I will be at the race July 14-16. Anyone else going?

Sorry, I'll be at Iola the weekend before, but I'll try to remember for next year. I love watching vintage Can-Am racing on TV and seeing all those old car go at it like the good old days.

Still trying to work it out to attend....

That's a great picture! The bumper is split, and the lower valence appears to have the turn signal lights mounted in a strange arrangement. Looks like they are mounted on the valenece/extension seam.

It was a Chevy show car. Hot Rod did a color feature on it in '67 and there may have been more than one due to detail differences. Lettering on the hood stated "MARK IV 396" and it had Weber carbs.

Rumor was Augie Pabst owned it and traded it locally. I saw it in town around 1980 and I believe it is still here. The Webers were gone.

I just talked to the current owner of the Cherokee Camaro!
He is looking for more information on it's history, especially photos of it.

The car was featured in two magazines reciently.

It appears there were two show cars that were almost identical, - the other one without a hood tach, different fuel filler, and red interior.

This car has the black interior and hood tach. It was driven by GM Styling boss Bill Mitchell, sold to Augie Pabst, then traded in at a local GM dealer, probably due to the weber carbs not functioning well in cold weather. Eventually found in a lake home Wis.

The car was the pace car for the Road America Can-Am race in 1967, and I believe also Watkins Glen Can-Am.

Special equipment on the Camaro was Corvette style bumpers front and rear but thinner section width.
SS/RS equipment, engine was a 396/375 with Weber Carburetors.
The special hood had a clear plexiglas cover to show off the weber carbs, it was open in the rear like the 69 "Fresh Air" hood.
On the side of the hood there is metal letters "Mark IV 396".
The fuel filler is in stock position but is a flip top "Lemans" type often seen on Cobras.
Interior is black with white RS striping on the seats, console wth auto trans shifter, optional console gage package, in dash tach

Rear spoiler is molded in on the corners, looks like a 68 vette.

If anyone has any additional info on this car or it's history, please post it so I can relay it to the owner. He's especially interested in period photos showing the wheels used.
Thanks, David

PS, I have the owners permission to post any photos of his car.

Thanks for those added photos.
Any leads on where the owner could come up with photos from 1967?
