I just bought a brand new crate 350 engine for my 71 SS Camaro. I would like to know how to paint it Original GM Orange. At this time it is Black because it’s a crate new engine.
Do I have to strip the black paint? Can I spray over the black paint??????
I am getting Crazy with the idea that my engine will chip in the future.

Regards

David

I bought an Acrylic Enamel from Eastwood Company. They say it’s specially formulated to paint engines.
But it doesn’t answer my question. Do I need to strip the original paint from the engine?
If so, How?

I'm not sure how well paint would stick to the current paint. It's not like you can scuff it easily. EZ Off oven cleaner will take most of it off. I just taped/sealed off the intake and the exhaust ports. And the crate probably came with exhaust port caps. I also took the pan & t/c off after the block was painted for new gaskets. I like unpainted gaskets. :)

Before & after (of course, not done yet...)

Make sure you use a high temp primer on bare metal. It will help it stick better. If you use a high temp clear over the paint it will clean up much easier when it gets dirty.

Excellent news.
I reduce a lot my work.
I have the engine assembled and the intake manifold mounted and I didn’t want to unassembled it again to strip the original paint.
I will clean it very well and paint it over the original paint.
Let’s see...

Thanks a lot guys

It's tough to do on an engine, but I would still scuff as much as you can before painting.
