I have a BB Chevy in a 67 and I am trying to put a belt from the crank pulley to the water pump pulley. I can't do it via the alternator because the P/S pump bracket is in the way. The P/S pump pulley only lines up with the front groove on the crank pulley.

So I need to put a belt from the crank to water pump but there is no tensioner or way to loosen them.
How do I get it on there?
What would you do?

The PS belt should be on the PS pulley and crank pulley only. The alt belt should go around the crank, wp, and alt pulleys.

Im not real familiar with the 67s, nor their brackets. If the belt is hitting something, then it sounds like there could be a bracket or pulley issue. Either the wrong part(s) or a spacing issue.

Pic would help.

I'll get a picture and report back. In the meantime, I rolled on a belt from crank to water pump. There is no tensioner or idler or anything like that. I coudn't get the belt on so I got it on there as much as I could, then I cranked the motor and that rolled it on rest of the way.

But its TIGHT. How tight? Well with the belt installed its pretty straight but you can still rotate the belt in your fingers. Still, the tension is there, no play at all.

Is there something after market made out there that I can buy that would bolt on as a tensioner? Prefferably bolting on to the passenger side and not the drivers side.

In the straight shot from alternator to crank (if the belt was installed to include the water pump, alternator and crank pulleys) the powersteering pump and bracket get in the way.

you have to make sure you have all the right pulleys and brackets for the engine. Do some research and check the part numbers on them. check out this site.http://www.camaros.org/pulleys-67-28jul00.pdf

Make sure that your power steering pump bracket is for a 67 big block because there are a few different ones.

Which side do you have your alternator on? is it on the drivers side like the 67-68 or on the passenger side like 69.

BBC p/s brackets differ from the SBC brackets. You can run just the crank and water pump on a double belt because it's been done in racing for years. You first measurebelt OD, then install it by putting belts on the pulleys first and then bolting the pulley to the pump. There hasn't been an idler used in the past but you could fabricate one.
