View Full Version : How I took the subframe bolt off...

so i've been reading all the posts about replacing the subframe bushings...and they were all pretty much right on.

front bolt comes out ok since it's a standard nut on the top part.
middle bolt refused to come out since the cage nut is rusted together with the bolt.
rear bolt came out w/o a problem since the cage nut is on the inside of the car.

so the middle bolt...
the cage around the nut was pretty much gone. so when i turn the bolt the cage nut would just spin and spin. there's no way i could hold it to get enough leverage to hold it.

i decided cut the head of the bolt off. once it's out the rest of the bolt came out from the top w/o drama. i used a cut off wheel to cut the stuff out.

figure i would share my experience with the group...thanks for all the help all.

Thinking about your problem, the only way you have to take the nut out with the rest of the bolt is making a hole on the upper side of the floor pan just over the cage and the nut.
You can use a Hole Saw which has a 1/4" drill. You can take the nut and the old cage out, repair the nut cage, weld it again and weld the piece of floor pan you have cut.
Little bit of grinder, paint and VOILA.

If some has a better way let us know.

Good look

After 30 minutes with an impact gun, I opted for a cutting torch! Took the head right off of the bolt. Later on, i went back with a pipe wrench to get the rest of the bolt out.

I pried the cage up and removed the nut/bolt. They looked like a melted candle from the years of rusting. The case is tacked in. I then used grade 8 bolts/nuts.
