View Full Version : dust cover
Dave Burlingham Jun 23rd, 06, 04:44 AM Help anyone!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm looking for what I am told is a a dust cover for a "big block" 350. Anyone ever hear this term or heard of such a engine before? I have purchased two dust covers for my car and neither one works,( naturally not original motor) For lack of a better descripton, the Flex plate bottoms out on the lower part of the pan. not deep enough. People tell me that is because I have what they call a "big block" 350 with a larger flexplate. They tell me that the early Impalas (60-67) sometimes had this engine. I have a powerglide if that matters.
Any ideas Team Camaro????????????????????????????????????????
Dave
KevinW Jun 23rd, 06, 05:25 AM Dave, you had me going for a while, I'm thinking snipe hunt. but after realizing your "dust cover" is the Trans converter cover, I got it. Flexplates come in 2 sizes, 168 teeth (big) and 153 teeth (small). Small block powerglides should have the small flex plates. Then the factory starter and factory cover will fit fine. Having the larger flex plate on there is something the factory did not do for Camaros, so that is why you are having a hard time finding the part.
I have 2 of the small flex plates hanging on my wall as decoration :)
Everett#2390 Jun 23rd, 06, 07:06 AM I think Dave's looking for an "inspection cover." The stamped steel cover covering up the torque convertor.
Dave should look for a Powerglide cover. The covers are transmission related, not engine related. Savage yards, local auto clubs, local want ads may be the best choice to find one.

You are correct.
I am looking for the cover for the flexplate. I have two also sitting in my garage the do not fit. Not the torque converter. I have looked at every swap meet that we go to plus 3 Restoration Companies with no luck. I have asked the question at the Chevelle site, here and CRG. some tell me there was a "big block" 350 some say I'm smokin to much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All I know is I have a powerglide and a small block with a large flexplate and a small starter.
I think I need to convert to the small flywheel will I pull the engine to repaint and clean up. Then I will also get the numbers off the block and find out what I actually have.
KevinW Jun 23rd, 06, 11:43 AM Dave, Some of the confusion is 69 SS350 manual trans did come with the "big Block" flywheel (168 teeth 11 inch clutch). But most if not all small block automatics came with the small flex plate. I think the large flex plate was only offered on the th400 mated to a real big block. The fact that you can bolt it up in many combos is the issue here. I think going back to the small flex plate will do the trick as long as one of the covers you have is for a PG. :)
Dave Burlingham Jun 23rd, 06, 08:00 PM And that may be the issue here. I am pretty new to the Camaro family, this 67 is my first. I had a 70 AMX for my first muscle car and then a "Goat". This Camaro with out exception is more fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But I need to get to know the "inners". Trial by error is the scenario here. I definetly will pull the engine and find out what is what.
