View Full Version : Had the car about 10 years is it a real x55?
mark2002 Jun 24th, 06, 10:34 AM Hello, I am new to Team Camaro, and have been a member over at Team Chevelle for a few years now. I am lucky enough to own a 69 of each. The Chevelle was my Grandfather's car that he bought new back in 69 and has been handed down for me to restore. I have had the Camaro for about 10 years, and I have only recently started to be interested in more of the history of my cars. When I bought my Camaro, it wasn't advertised as an SS, but merely a 350 4speed car. I think I paid 7k for it. It has dark blue Z28 stripes on lemans blue paint. Although not original, I like it very much. The car has a 350, but not the original. Muncie 4 speed and 12 bolt posi rear.
Would the tag experts please help in telling me if this looks like a real tag? I don't know if the scammers were swapping tags back in the early nineties, but I guess anything is possible. I can't figure out how to post a picture yet, but I would be happy to email it to anyone that would be able to post it.
Thanks in advance. Mark

bertfam Jun 24th, 06, 01:32 PM Mark,
The tag is real but the rivets aren't original, indicating it's been off the car at some point. It could still be your tag, but we could give you more info if you can give us the VIN. If the dates line up, it could be your original tag. If they don't, then we start more detective work.

mark2002 Jun 24th, 06, 02:13 PM Thanks for posting my pics Jerry. The VIN is 124379N530103 Any info on the tag or the vin would be greatly appreciated. I think the car was white at one time.
bertfam Jun 24th, 06, 02:24 PM Mark,
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but your VIN and this trim tag don't line up. Your VIN (530103) indicates your car was built in late October, 1968 and the Trim Tag shows the build date (04C) to be the 3rd week of April, 1969. As you can see, they don't match so either the Trim Tag is incorrect, or the VIN. If I were you, I would check the hidden VIN under the cowl on the passengers side of the car. Here's what you should see (below). If the two VIN numbers match, then the Trim Tag's been replaced. If they DON'T match, then you have bigger problems. Let us know what you find...

Mark C Jun 24th, 06, 02:31 PM Make sure you don't have a typo in your VIN number as posted,124379N63xxxx could be an 04C car.
bertfam Jun 24th, 06, 02:41 PM Good catch Mark! Let's keep our fingers crossed.

mark2002 Jun 24th, 06, 03:37 PM well, I don't see any numbers in the cowl on the passenger side. perhaps they are painted over or ground off? Is there anywhere else I can look for numbers? Sorry Mark C, no typo on the VIN.
JimM Jun 24th, 06, 03:44 PM you could pop the cowl off and maybe see better, hardest part of that is popping off the wipers wiothout scratching anything.
The other hidden vin is under the heater box on the firewall. you hafta take the fender off to get at it.
You might also look on the trans for a vin stamp, it could possibly be original.
mark2002 Jun 24th, 06, 03:49 PM the only number I could find on the trans was 392566
bertfam Jun 24th, 06, 03:50 PM Mark,
HERE'S A THREAD (http://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?t=65568&highlight=Hidden+vin+pics) showing the locations of the hidden VIN's. Like Jim said, remove the cowl and get a better look.

mark2002 Jun 24th, 06, 04:39 PM Ed, the thread you sent helped me find the location of the hiden VIN on the cowl much better. I can make out almost all of the last part of my VIN 530103
It was much closer to the edge than the yellow pic above. The tops of the numbers were almost under the cowl itself. I guess I don't have a real x55, but it wasn't sold to me as one either. Thanks for all the info and the fun on this rainy Saturday.

bertfam Jun 24th, 06, 04:49 PM Mark,
Yes, having the VIN's match is MUCH better than having them NOT match!! At least you know they haven't been tampered with. Too bad about the Trim Tag, but if you're happy with the car, then who cares.

mox67 Jun 26th, 06, 12:29 PM The more interesting question is what happend to the original car that trim tag belonged to :)
Probably cut into pieces, or a heavily modified drag car, but still fun to think about.
