View Full Version : Question about a Strange 33 spline posi carrier

Here's the deal...About two months ago I received my Strange 33 spline posi carrier. It came in a box marked Strange also. I installed the ring gear and put the assembly in the housing and set the back lash. I had to send the differential out to a local shop to have some Moser housing ends put on and to narrow it a bit. That process took about two months...that's another story. Well, after I got the rear end back I wanted to make sure I got back what I sent out. I removed the cover and right off the bat I noticed "Eaton" stamped on the carrier??!!! Now my question is, Does Strange use Eaton carriers? To be honest, I really didn't notice that on there before so I wonder if someone pulled a fast one or WTF? I quickly pulled the axles out to make sure it was still my 33 spline and it is but what happened here?

Well, I did fire off an E-mail to them this morning because I don't really have the time to call them and sit on hold.
I was hoping to hear from someone that has delt with Strange carriers on a more regular basis that could help shed some quick insight on this matter. I don't really care if this is a Strange or an Eaton carrier...I think they both would be just fine but what I want to know is did someone pull a fast one on me.
I do appreciate your quick responce though. If I have some time this afternoon I'll give them a call and see what I can find out and if I hear anything I'll make sure to post it so we can all be a little wiser.

Update:

I just got an email back from Strange. Here it is...

"U.S. Gear makes the posi unit and they do use an Eaton carrier and replace the spider gears with their hardened 33 spline pieces"

I feel better now. I thought someone at the shop pulled the ole switcheroo on me but now I see the light. Hopefully this info will be useful to someone else.

I don't know of any other clutch type posi for the 12 bolt with 33 spline gears except for Eaton. They are built by Eaton as a 30 spline posi and then someone takes the case and bores out the ends to accept the larger axles and replaces the 30 spline gears with 33 spline gears. Just about everybody sells the Eaton posi with 33 spline gears installed. They just put it in their box and ship it. There are only about 2 places that actually build the units, and they sell them to everybody else. If you look at it again you will probably see where they ground off the Eaton casting numbers. If it is a 3 series it would have had the EDB30140 number cast into the case.

Thanks for the reply Big Gear Head. I still learn something new everyday. I didn't look at the numbers on the carrier, I just saw the word Eaton and got concerned. Can't believe I didn't notice that when I set the gears up. Oh well, it's in the car and ready to race this Friday.
