I have a 84 camaro z28 with a 383 stroker just installed and when i took it for a test drive the whole car vibrated and the dash board shaked. At about 3000 rpms it starts to calm down. I've replaced the transmission mount with a heavy duty one. Also how do you adjust the rear brakes?? does anyone know...
thanks
Charlie

Flywheel or flexplate match the 400 crank??? Also the harmonic balancer.

Hard for a ujoint to make the whole car shake but real easy for the wrong flywheel or balancer to do do it.

thats probably it because the flywheel is off the stock 305

would I have to have the fly wheel replaced or balanced to the engine, the engine was machine balanced with the harmonic balancer but i thought I could put the stock transmission, flywheel and flexplate on and it would be fine. Sounds like I might be wrong

Yep wrong you are, don't drive the sucker one more foot.

Make damn sure that the motor is external balance and replace the flywheel.

Just to expand on what MM is trying to tell you...

The stock 305 is an "internal balance" engine, and use "neutral balance" harmonic balancer and flex plate/flywheel.

A stock 400 SB is an "external balance" engine, and use a different HB and flex plate/flywheel.

So, if you have a 400 crank that is external balance, you can't use the 305 flex plate. You need one identified as "external balance" and with the same number of teeth on the ring as the 305 plate you have now.

If you do a search on "external balance" in these forums, you will find a ton of info.

The other point MM was trying to make is that if things were shaking that bad, you should probably pull the engine and check that the crank and HB are still balanced as an assembly, as they could have been damaged in the shaking.
