: How much paint??

My 69 paint is looking its 30 some odd years old. I want to repaint the whole car. How much paint is typically required? Also if I am changing the color how much more paint is needed (going from Black to Silver or yellow). I was thinking 3 coats of Acrilic Lacqure with no clear. Do you think 1 gallon is enough? With solvent this equates to about 2 1/2 gallons of sprayable material. Any help is greatly apprechated.

I don't think one (1) gallon will get the job done. Changing colors requires doing the door jambs, under the deck lid and underhood fender areas. Three (3) coats will also probably be a bit short. Lacquer is cut 125% so it goes on relatively thin. By the time you sand and rub it, and using only 3 coats, you will probably rub through it.
I must assume you have a reason for choosing Lacquer for this job. I don't want to try to steer you away from what you want to use, but there are other, and in my opinion, better materials for a modern day repaint and they spray as easy as Lacquer. They will also last 3 times longer, but that's your choice.

I have laqoure paint on my car presently not GM orginal paint job. I am not planning on striping all this existing paint off. That is why I am forced to stay with laqoure paint. I would use a better paint, but am afraid the paint underneth would cause problems.

You can spray over a lacquer paint job, but you will want to prime the entire vehicle. The only time I've evr had problems spraying a car that was prviously a laquer job was when the panels were not primed complete, then swelling took place in the edges of the primer.

What would you suggest instead of laquire? Laquire was apealing to me in the ease it is able to go on, and its fast drying time. This is my first paint job. I know I will probable mess a few spots up, but I was planning on just sanding them out and reshooting them.

Hey Blk69,

You may want to look in urathane paint. It sprays easy and is alot more durable than lacquer. You only need to spray 3 to 5 (single stage) coats depending how much/if your going to color sand and buff.

With lacquer you'll have to buff it out after a few years where urathane will keep it's luster longer.

As for striping the car if you use Dupont's DP40(green) or DP90(black) epoxy primer this will seal the exsisting lacquer.

PPG makes DP40 & DP90 not DuPont, and I would still recomend a primer surfacer instead of the DP unless you are going to sand the DP. Base coat with a urathane clear 2-3 coats of base (depending on color) and 2-3 coat of clear.

Completely different route that I am going to go with is aircraft epoxy paint. It is all water based, buffs out to a high gloss shine, and flows out easy. you can roller on the primer and the sealer, and you spray out the color. Fully uv protected, designed for high impact hits (the body filler i am using is suppost to stop a bullet after 3 months of hardening.

urathane....then I need to seal the laquire underth. I guess I could spray a sealer first. What kinda cost increase is Urathane vs Laquire? Also how much more paint would I need? With Urathane you cannot wet sand between paint coats correct? You can only sand the finial finsh?

Go to www.drms.dla.mil/newsales (http://www.drms.dla.mil/newsales)
this is the Defense Reutilization and Marketing Service and Has the Air Craft epoxy from different Military bases. I just sent out 23 kits (two part primers and hardners) to the DRMO here in Hawaii. As far as the bullet proof dont know about that but its wind rated to #### speeds and will stand up pretty well. dont see many F-15's or C-5 air craft return with and paint peeling, only problem is i'm not sure of its compatability with other paints.
