Anybody ever rebuilt a brake splitter? I am having my wheel cylinders sleeved on my 68 and mentioned the splitter to the guy and he said they rebuild them for $65. What is in a splitter and what do you do to rebuild one. How many parts can be in a 2" hunk of brass? Thanks

Welcome to Team Camaro!

One of the biggest benefits here is the vast amount of posts to search for info. The splitter is also called the distribution block, and has a low pressure warning switch inside. Here's a couple posts with info about rebuilding it.

If yours is a "hunk of brass", it sounds like you may have the later model combination valve (both a warning switch and a proportioning valve); 1st gen distribution blocks aren't brass.

Thanks for the reply. I guess I'm not calling it by the correct name, the block under the m/c, I call the proportioning or distribution valve. I see Rick's calls it a splitter so a splitter it is. The one I'm referring to is on the sub-frame in the two piece rear brake line. Any idea what that part is called and what they do to rebuild it? thanks

This one? http://thefirstgensite.com/images/hydv_3.jpg

The one in the 2piece rear line is the rear brake pressure regulator. It is a proportioning valve.

Inline tube sells new ones for about $75. They incorrectly call it a hold-off valve.

There's probably 2 o-rings in it, a piston and a spring. I haven't taken one apart while paying much attention (just looking for gunk/corrosion).
The spring rate and the piston design are what controls the valve's function.

Yes thats the animal. I opened mine up(unscrewed the plug) for a look, removed the o-ring ,but didn't want to go any farther for fear of screwing it up. I quess I'll pay the $65 to have it redone. thanks for the replys

I have a problem with the dash brake light. I have disc brakes, with rear drums on my 69. All parts are either new or in good condition. I have a full pedal when stopping, but if I push into it a little hard the dash light flashes on. I don't feel like the pedal is going too far or is mushy. Is it possible the brake switch on the splitter valve could be bad? Nothing is leaking, but the light flashing is bothersome.

The switch senses a pressure differential between the front and rear systems when it turns the light on; you probably still have a bit of air in one system - rebleed it again.
