: Need advice on engine build up

Since I pulled my engine and will be spicing up the engine to get a lot more ponies out of it I need some help picking parts out to make sure I build this up right. As I said in a previous post I pulled the engine due to serious blow my issues so Im hoping to resolve that during this process.

The engine is a 327 borred .30 over. Crank was replaced a few years back so it should be good to go still. the pistions im not sure what they are but have the slight groove on top for the valves. Im looking to keep around a 10:1 CR.

The cam I have been look at is the Comp Cams 270H. Keeping it a flat tapet, will add the rocker tip 1.6 rocker arms and of course all the lifters and push rods to complement this.

This will be replacing what I beleive to be a mild RV cam and standard rocker arms.

For the heads Ive been leaning towards the Edelbrock RPMs. Since I have been having blow by issues was was toying with holding off with the heads until after I put it back together and see if the problem has been resolved. However Im not to fond of the idea of tearing the current camel hump -192 heads with 1.5/1.96 valves off again since I have them off already.

Advice needed- Is it a good idea to hold off on the new heads until I verify the blow by issue has been resolved or is it a better idea since Im swapping the cam and all that comes along with that do replace the heads now?

For the intake and Carb I was planing for the Edelbrock RPM intake and a 650 CFM carb TBD. Im just hoping the RPM intake will fit under my stock flat non cowl hood.

So my underlying question is will I be happy with this setup and should I go with more aggresive cam/heads etc. The car is a weekend cruiser yet I want it to be a car to be reckoned with when it sees some runs.

Thanks in advance for the input and let me know if there is any other details I can provide that would help with the input.

My recomendation is to do it once and do it right. You have to rebuild it anyways, so if you do it correcty youll have nothing to worry about. It will likely be very obvious where the blowby is coming from once you have it all on the bench in pieces.

For the cam the 270H is in the ballpark for that combo. It would be very torqey. I would step it up if was me, and get some free power/rpm by going with a solid cam, with bigger lobes. Maybe 238/242@.050

The Performer RPM heads really are very good out of the box, and can be made to be STELLAR with proper port work. And that RPM intake should fit fine under your hood.

The 1st thing u need to do, before anyone can makev suggestions, is to decide what u are going to use the car for.
There is the extreme end pure around towm, highway cruiser, economical and at the same time a real stump puller. 1200 to 4000 rpm.
This lights up the back wheels across an intersection and further in the dry, pulls to just over 100 mph fast, on a 308 diff.. (then leans out on a 450 cfm carb) it continus to pull, but not a good idea to cruise 110mph + for long periods as it runs lean. a bigger carb fixes that (600) if needed with bottom end not quite as responsive but still damn good.
On the strip one pulls high 90 to low 100 mph limiting to just over 4500 rpm.
I run a blower high lift low duration cam (2500 to 6500 rpm) advanced 2 degs coming in at 1200 rpm, rams horns, 202 fuelies, 10.5:1, performer manifold, hei dizzy, 425cfm carb, on a holley 450 base plate.

Then there is the other End...Strip...not all that economical, less throttle response on the road at bottom end, with a rev range around the 2500 to 6500.

U need to decide what the car is going to primarily used for 1st

I ran a similar combo is my 327 up until last year. You'll like the 270H, nice cam. Bumping up a bit would be nice too, maybe an XE or voodoo around 276?

I looked at the VooDoo Cams and saw their 268 cam with the following specs.

Advertised Duration IN/EX: 268/276
Duration @ .050 IN/EX: 227/233
Gross Valve Lift IN/EX: .489"/.504"
LSA / ICL: 110/106
Valve Lash IN/EX: Hyd/Hyd
RPM Range: 1800-6200

Will this get the extra power you guys were talking about over the comps cam 270H? I noticed this has a higher lift then the 270H which has a .470/.470 lift. Will the VooDoo cam work with the valve springs that come standard with the Edelbrock RPM heads? Also I was going to go with the Magnum Roller Rocker Arm and get all the matching push rods and lifters for the setup should this all work together as well?
