Hello, I am going to be doing some fiber glass work on my 68 soon. I have to patch up a few small holes around my rear window graemlins/angry.gif
The holes are only about pencil sized. Ive never worked with fiber glass before, but I think I have the basics down. I have talked to some experienced people, and I also read the guide: (BODY SHOP "Basics of Basics Series" by MartinSR)

What I did not find in there though, was what is needed to prep finished fiber glass work for paint? Thanks!

Most fiberglasses you'll pick up will contain a wax to help the cure. To be safe, I'd do an acetone wipe, sand off the top, prime and paint and you'll be good to go.

Personally, I don't think fiberglass should be used to repair metal. Welding small holes or patching larger holes with metal is the best bet. An alternative is to lead or soldier with a propane torch. The holes are non-structural so lead or 70/30 soldier will be ok. 70/30 soldier is what the use to repair old radiators with.

I've done small fiberglass repairs before without any problems. Make sure you rough up the metal real good so the 'glass has something to bite onto. Also, make sure you've removed all the rust before applying it or you'll have to redo it down the road. The only issue I see (unless you're a purist) is how good it bonds to the metal. And like everything else, if you follow the directions and prep well, it should be alright. Heck, they make boats out of the stuff and if it's good enough for the Corvette........
