All,

Can someone tell me how to check the lube in a ’69 Z/28 manual steering box? I don’t see any kind of check plug or anything. I did a search on this website and didn’t find anything, but I may not have been using the right search words. Thanks.

Doug, my memory is foggy on manual boxes. But isnt there a side cover? I think thats where you would pack the grease/lube in it. You would also have to replace that seal. I remember it has to be 3/4 full to allow for air gap or something like that. Again, this is from memory. Checki it out and see if that makes sense.

I will look in the chasis service manual and see what I can find tonite.

I hate to repeat this, but the chasis service manual and the assembly manuals are priceless additions to your garage's book shelf. That is if you dont already have them.

There are three bolts attaching the top cover - you fill it through the front hole, and check it through the middle hole. :thumbsup:

OK, thanks. I'll try that tonight. When you say fill it through the front hole I assume you are referring to the bolt that is towards the front of the car. I would have thought this bolt hole would be at a lower elevation than the middle bolt hole making it hard to get the oil level to the. I’ll look at it tonight and maybe it will make sense to me. If I’m thinking right this cover has the stud and locknut in the middle of it that adjusts the gear lash which I assume I wouldn’t want to be turning it any. Does it take 80/90 gear lube?

P.S. I have the Fisher body manual, but I’m going to check into getting the chassis service manual and assembly manual.

Use a good grade lithium based chassis (ball joint) grease. Just don't overfill the gear. You want some air space inside the gear to allow for expansion of the grease with underhood temperatures. You do NOT want to mess with the slotted screw and lock nut in the center of the cover.
