I've heard one may swap the guts from a close ratio power steering box from a late model Camaro/TransAm (up to '85) to install into the stock power steering box.
Has anyone tried this swap & had any luck? I want to retain my original PS box since its dated & coded!

I think this conversion works on up into the 90's steering boxes.I've heard of this actually CAMARO magazine did an article on this a few years back on one of those " how to update your camaro on a budget using swapped parts from other cars" type stories. The problem is the hose fittings went to metric during this period and I think you can get a hose 1/2 standard...1/2 metric or use an adapter from one to the other at the box/pump.I dont know the exact years but I know that steering box was use for an eternity bu G.M.

Yes, it is possible to swap the internals and retain your old case that will keep your old hoses. Here is a link to Jim Shea's Corvette pages. You should be able to find all you need to know in the pages. ( PDF files.)

im also interested in doing the same thing and wanted to know if that if im converting from manual steering and i have to buy a new power steering pump anyway, could i just use one from a 3rd gen camaro and not have to buy the adapters?
im using this on a short water pump big block.
thanks guys

You will need third gen. hoses and I think you will still need a new rag joint.

Since our firstgen's are rear steer and thirdgen's are front, you may need custom hoses or hoses from a different application. Stock thirdgen hoses would be too short. Might try a search, this may have been covered.

im probably going to do a hydroboost. and i think all but one line (box return to pump) is custom anyway, right... so i need to do some research anyway
by the way, do you guys think these stock pumps and boxes work with the hydroboost pressures?
also, is the pulley from a 67 camaro pump going to work on the third gen pump? are they press or keyway?
thanks guys
sorry for hijacking the thread

IIRC right, a '67's P/S pulley is a key pulley and I figure the newer one is a push-on.
