: Are these '67/'68 or '69 bumper guards?
Mike_M Jul 18th, 06, 07:32 AM I'm considering bidding on some bumper guards on ebay, I'd rather get originals rechromed than buy repros. They're advertised as '67/'68 guards, but when I compared them to the pics in the Classic Industries catalogue, they look a lot more like the '69 guards. I asked the seller if he was sure they'd fit a '68, and he sent me some better pics. If someone could identify them, I would appreciate it - thanks!

67 RSS Jul 18th, 06, 07:45 AM Dont know what a 69 looks like..but these are different from my 67 guards....which have brackets that bolt on rather than integral welded brackets...
cjrolke Jul 18th, 06, 08:15 AM i would almost say that they are 69 but i cant be 100% sure
what makes me think that is the mount to the bumper
Mike_M Jul 18th, 06, 08:32 AM Thanks guys. If they're different than the '67's, from the pics in the Classic Industries catalog I'm pretty sure they're '69
3forme Jul 18th, 06, 08:37 AM Those came on all standard 69 Camaros and are below the bumper only, don't bid to much they are a dime a dozen
Mike_M Jul 18th, 06, 08:47 AM Thanks - yeah, if they're '69 I won't bid at all. I need the ones that fit a '68 - I think the smaller ones were an option on the '67's only, the '68's just had those big ones with the rubber strips. I like the look of rear bumper guards but prefer the smaller ones. I'll have to keep looking.
Black69 Jul 18th, 06, 09:03 AM They are for 69, I bought some repro's so I could get the originals redone. The repro's weren't to bad but didn't quite fit like the original to the bumper. I'll use them until the original's are redone.
DjD Jul 18th, 06, 09:06 AM I can't say for '67 -'68 but you can still get GM new (nors) bumper guards. The thing is like a lot of small chrome items (like emblems and bezels) the reproduction parts are usually better quality fit and finish...

Are they? Hmm.. that kind of figures. All my emblems are repro, they look pretty good, but I bought a repro front bumper recently and am not impressed. Very thin, much thinner than original, and the chrome finish isn't great. That's very interesting what you say about the repro emblems and bezels. I guess the factory chrome had no reason to be "show quality"
SY1 Jul 18th, 06, 08:06 PM I don't believe 67 or 68 ever had these on any model. They are a 69 only item. You could get the bumper guard with the rubber strip in it on all three years, but 67-8 were slightly different than the 69 bumper guards. What you are looking at many refer to as 'bumperettes" and I believe to be a 69 only item.
67 RSS Jul 18th, 06, 08:26 PM While we're on the topic..... I have a question for my 67...trim tag calls for bumper guards and I have the front panel holes and have rechromed a set after throwing my originals away in the late 70's.
Car never had the holes for rear bumper guards and presume all 67's came with rear bumperettes and mixing the two (gurads on front with ettes on back) is appropriate.
Any thoughts?

We tend to over restore... These shots are of an early GM bumper guard. Note the fit to the GM bumper and note the slag in the finish mostly under the rubber but it does extend past... The flash actually masks it some...
Note even though friends have pointed out paint flaws, a scratch or some dirt missed during detailing no one has ever even said a word about the fit or finish...
SY1 Jul 18th, 06, 10:56 PM I don't know of any first gens that came with front bumper guards and bumperettes on the rear. When you ordered HD suspension rear bumper guards were a mandatory part of the HD suspension package. All 68/9 Z28 should've come with rear bumper guards, it was part of the required package. Also in order to get front bumper guards you must also have ordered rear bumper guards.
If your 67 shows it came with bumper guards and it has the front ones, it should've had rear ones on it also because the front ones were optional AFTER you had ones specified. The only mounting holes in 67-8 for the rear guards are located 12.49" in from the rear bumper mid-station bolts (the middle rear bumper bracket below the tail light assemblies). The hole vertically was positioned almost behind the rear bumper and goes into the trunk compartment, you'll see it if you lay on the ground and look up it'll be a 13/32" hole behind the bumper.
I suspect since your car has documentation showing the bumper guard option you'll find the holes for the rear ones located behind the bumper into the trunk compartment. If you don't have those holes please post that info, since it goes against what is considered to be the norm. Because anything is possible with these cars and the rules are always changing.
67 RSS Jul 19th, 06, 07:31 AM Thanks for the feedback SY1..yes I have the bumper guard option on 67 RSSS 350 trim tag and had the front guards. (Group 5 option B appearance group- floor mats/guards is all Ive ever seen it deciphered as)
Never had any rears (or bumperettes either- maybe tossed?). Looked for the holes and have none in rear at bumper. Two lower holes in rear pan. So I purchased a used set of front guards and ettes and rechromed.
Replaced the trunk pan during restoration and was careful to duplicate all holes etc...had to fab the channel plate under bumper area.
A local expert reiterated your story that the two did not mix, thus my question.
Nonetheless Im sticking to my plan as that appears the way the car was shipped!

Yeah, I noticed that. That wasn't shown in the pic in the auction. I don't think that would've been TOO hard to fix, a good soak with some good penetrating oil and an easy-out should be able to get that right out, but I'm not going to worry about it. They're definitely not '67/'68 guards, so I won't be bidding on them. Thanks everyone for your input:beers:
