Hey guy's,I'm going crazy trying to choose a solid lifter cam for my currant 396 build.I have a 396 2 bolt w/ARP studs bored .060 over,063 oval port heads that will be fitted with bigger valves and ported,10.5 to 1 compression, and a eagle spec. 4340 crank and rods.Trans is a M22 w/ 3:73 gears out back.Comp cams recommended a XS274s,and Lunati said to go w/ a 40208.I read alot on the site about the lunati 402A1LUN also.I was hoping for a rough idle, and most of its life will be street use.Appreciate any help.

I just bought a cam from Ultradyne cams (now called Bullet cams). Call them at (662)893-5670, ask for their tech guy and have him help you decide on a cam for your application. They custom ground a cam for my application. I had called them on Tuesday with my car's specs.....and on Friday my cam arrived at my house! I am VERY pleased with their service. They are still a small enough company to actually care about your car and it's performance.

Just got off the phone with Bullet cams (Ultradyne) and couldn't be happier with the service. They recommended a custom grind - 284/292 @ .050 w/ 600"/625" lift.Couldn't believe the price was so reasonable either!!!

 284/292 @ .050  Are you sure that's right? That would be a tough one on the street.

A friend has a 69 with a 427 M-22 and 3.73s. It has the Lunati 40207. Great street idle and midrange but with the 2.20 low 4spd and 3.73s it not the greatest street combo. I would think your 396 would be worse the cam is 237 .050 in 247 .050 ex 110 sep and 108 int. CL.. I would think about going down from there not up (you sure you got the specs right)

I will second the "not so street freindly" comment. with that much cam, you will be smashing your head against the wall cursing the stupid 2.20 first gear in that muncie. I ran a comp 280H 230/230 @ .050 in a 396 with an M-22 and it was not too bad for stret manners w/ a 3.73 gear and 275/60 tire.

Imho, yes!

I'd go with the 402A2Lun that wildman mentioned earlier b/c you have a pretty small BB if you will consider it as such!

In fact, I went with no more than a good old CC 282S solid for my about 9.8 to 1 CR., 496 for midrange grunt.

Nothing fancy at all here!!
