Here is my question..
I have already replaced the inner and out wheel wells on my 69 camaro we are in the process of replacing the quarter panels .
Putting on new skins.
I am fanging and laping my skins my father and I already cut the new skins to fit but they are not neatly cut is there a way I can make the edges nice?
I can take pictures if you would like..
We are using adhesive to put the panels on Duramix Large Panel anyone else use this method?
Could use pictures if anyone can help out.
Thanks,
John

The Duramix panel adhesive will eventually shrink and show a line where the two panles are joined. I have seen it done a hundred times, the panel adhesive is a great product but it has its limitations. The only erea I would say the adhesive would be good for is the wheel well lip.

I would NOT suggest using Duramix on a seam so long and so delicate. I suggest triming the face panel, laying it over the old panel and scribing a line. Then cut and butt, or cut it long and flange it. Spot Weld it every 12", then go back and do spot welds every 12" half way between the first welds, then again, then again. this way you are just making little heat areas, never close to one another.

I agree, have seen the same thing. Welding is the only way to insure a proper seam. Although I don't believe a skin is a proper repair anyway, just a cheaper option. An air saw is a good tool to cut a straight line. Harbor freight has them for about 40 bucks. Use a 24t hacksaw blade and just cut it down to the length you desire. Less heat this way than a cut off wheel.

I'm no body man. I haven't mastered spray bombs yet. I did see an interesting use for those Sears Laser Level toys in use on an old fat fendered car being chopped, channeled and sectioned in Rod & Custom that stuck in my mind. Using the laser beam and a panel cutter in an air chisel they fileted that car as straight as an arrow.

I did alot of reading here before I installed my 80% quarters and I did what everyone else suggested,
1. cut off the majority of the old panel
2. lay the new panel on top of remainder of old panel
3. get it exactly where it should be (body lines match up, wheel well clamped together, etc...)
4. Tack in the new panel over the old panel
5. Use body saw to cut both panels at once
6. Pull out the remainder of old panel through trunk
7. Start tacking in new panel while being careful not to warp

TA,
If you've got more pics, Id love to see the finished or at least ground product. Anything I can see that will lower my fear would be great. Quarters are on the list as soon as the shop cools down in the fall.

In this picture on the edge closest to the door you can see what i mean by tacking the new 1/4 over the old one.

Here are a few pics after I have done some inital grinding, there are still a few spots that i need to go back and spend a little more time on.

I will have to use a little bit of filler and do some sanding / blocking because of the welding / grinding but i still prefer a 80% quarter to a full one
