I don't know if Firebird was treated with a differently or with additional sound treatment coating than Camaro, but I'll ask my bird question anyway. (I have a 68 bird) I looked at a set of Camaro doors offered for sale at a show and the inside coating was different and much less. It could be production variation or maybe different products were used.
I'm looking to restore the inside of a new door skin and to restore the inside of the trunk. The original coating has a rippled or stippled texture, almost like cottage cheese. It has a consistancy much like latex driveway coating sealer as it strips off. It comes off pretty easily with aircraft stripper, leaving clean metal and not much rust beneath. I would just leave it alone except cracks here and there show some rust underneath.
My plan is to strip to bare steel. Then I'll spray DPLF epoxy, two coats. I would like to know what to apply over the epoxy that will look like the OEM product and will give the same or better sound deadening properties. I've considered 3M's Body Schutz, but I've never used the product first hand.
What are folks here using for frame-off restorations? I would like to go over top of the epoxy primer and sound quieting coat with an original spatter and finally a clear coat. That raises another question, how does this spatter paint act when clear is sprayed over top? Does it bleed and make a mess?
The quarters have this coating while the trunk floor is different. I can't tell what was originally on the truck floor because it was a mix of rust and spatter paint.
Anyone who can advise the best way, please speak up. Photos and product part numbers would greatly appreciated.
