View Full Version : Is it worth dropping the gas tank?

How difficult is it to drop the gas tank to look for a build sheet. My car is a plain jane 68 LOS build. What are the chances it would have ever had a build sheet above the tank? I've had the rest of the car (interior) completely apart and didn't find it.

You don't need to drop it all the way...Just loosen the straps and remove the rubber filler neck a bit and take a peak with a flashlight....

Not sure about the 68's but when I checked my all original 67 survivor, I found nothing....

Now I do know that a lot of guys have found them on their 69 LOS cars

It only takes a few minutes....so I would check just for the helluva it!

I have never heard of the build sheet being tucked away in the car ... My Los car didn't have it on the gas tank I just replaced ... kmg1969ss

Nothing but dirt on top of my tank. This would be a good subject for a poll.

I found the build sheet on top of the tank of my 69 LOS built Camaro. Looked like the dead sea scrolls, and disintegrated like dust! Good thing I already knew it wasn't an SS, or I would have been HACKED! :D:D:D

Very common to find the chassis broadcast copy on the top of the gas tank on the Van Nuys '69's. Mine was removed around 2001. Not sure about the '68's.

After all these years to find one now the car would have to have been protected from the elements for at least a portion of the time. Remember it's just an 8x11 standard piece of paper.

Good luck!!

Dave, When you had the interior apart, did you look way up into the springs of the rear seat bottom cushion (behind the sound deadener)? I had mine out of my '68 Lordstown Firebird several times over the years and didn't see it until I was told to look for it there.

I had them completely tore apart. Nothing there.

I just thought, what the heck I'll go give it a try. Went and took a look and realized I don't have a wrench to take off the tank strap nuts. No way an end wrench will fit and I don't have that deep of a 9/16 socket or a crows foot. A good excuse to pick up a set of crows foot sockets next time I'm at the hardware store.

Between my buddy and myself, we have dismantled at least a few hundred cars either to restore or part out. NEVER, EVER seen a broadcast sheet (there is no "build sheet" for first gens) over a tank. Now I have pulled build sheets off the tanks of Corvettes, and also Van Nuys Chevelles, but never off a Camaro.

kmg.. its to bad your car didnt have the broadcast sheet on top of the tank but as you hang around our site here, you will learn alot of things that help all of us in our resto process. My tank had been off and repaired before I bought the car, so my LOS (VN) car didnt have the broadcast sheet either but over the years in here is VERY common for them to be found. Not in Norwood built cars tho.

Frank...You must not have been parting out LA built 69's because I have found a ton of them on 69's. Always on the left side and most could be seen hanging off the edge if you looked behind the rear tire and over the tailpipe. My old Burgundy L78 convert that a friend now owns had it on it. I also pulled one off a Lemans blue L78 convert I had. Also pulled one off a Orange JL8 Z28.

I saved the tank ... I can look again (ya never know) ... I am sure there are allot of things I could learn (already have too, removing aftermarket shackles, DROPPING the gas tank, and now trying to replace missing grounding straps), from this here Camaro site) ... kmg1969ss

I just replaced my tank a couple of weeks ago on my 69 LA car, and it was there. All boogered up, unreadable, and now in the landfill.
