View Full Version : Gas tank reading badly?
maxharvard Jul 29th, 06, 04:03 PM Ok...here's my issue.
I installed a new gas tank, sending unit and gauge by autometer.
The gauge reads 1/4 tank left. I fill it with 8 gallons. Isnt the tank suppose to be 18 gallons? What would cause this? I'm sure i installed the sending unit properly.
foreverlookin Jul 29th, 06, 05:14 PM What is the question? What happens after you put 8 gallons in her? She go full?
maxharvard Jul 29th, 06, 07:37 PM Yep, it will go full on the gauge. There's only one way to install the sending unit right? If you screw it up, the fuel line doesnt point the right way.
FBODY Jul 29th, 06, 08:01 PM Hi maxharvard,
I have the same issue, new tank, new sending unit and approx. 8 gallons to fill her up. I have the original console fuel gauge. Between empty and full takes me 8 gallons to fill up, I therefore have 10 gallons left in the tank.
Where did you purchase you tank and sending unit from? What are the brands and P/Ns?
My sending unit is a dii Corvex (3/8 Repro from Classic Industries) and the tank is Made in Taiwan P/N 642, CV6003.
BPOS has the same problem, here another thread:
http://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?t=85517
I'm thinking about removing the fuel tank to bend the sending unit float rod in order to make it match the gauge.
We are three now!!!
Daniel.
maxharvard Jul 29th, 06, 08:02 PM i got mine from Classic Industries. I'm wondering if the pickup for the sending unit is going far enough into the tank.
FBODY Jul 29th, 06, 08:05 PM I tried two new sending units, with similar problem, 1/8 from each other.
When I removed the 1st new one, I noticed that full (90 ohms) would have the float beyond the top of the tank. That's why I'm considering trying bending the float road to make it match !!!
Daniel.
maxharvard Jul 29th, 06, 08:20 PM I have yet to try and run it out of fuel just yet. I'm wondering if it's the float or the pick up.
2ndly, is there a possibility that it's installed wrong? i wouldnt think that'd be an issue.
FBODY Jul 29th, 06, 08:44 PM From the test I did with the second new sending unit, it was Ok when I installed it. It seems like it (sendin unot resistance) changed value when I started the car, with both sending unit after starting the car, they both went from 1/4 to empty.
I don't think that it would be installed wrong, it's too simple.
tawodi Jul 31st, 06, 03:11 PM Gas guages can be aggravating. I have the Autometer guage with the stock fuel pump and sending unit. When filling up the needle on the guage goes way past full and I use 10 gallons out of a 15 gallon tank by the time the guage says 1/2 full. I learned that the guage and the sending unit have to match in resistance. In my case the guage is at a lower resistance so it reads high. I was told I could contact Autometer and talk to someone in Tech who could steer me to get the sending unit to match my guage. Sounds like you have the same problem but your sending unit has less resistance which results in the guage reading low.
maxharvard Aug 7th, 06, 11:58 AM THis is still a problem guys... any help?
zdld17 Aug 7th, 06, 01:15 PM Thought this was a 16 gal tank? 8+half = full
fishin4info Aug 7th, 06, 02:51 PM Have you lowered the front of your car or raised the rear? My car had air shocks in the rear and the gas gauge would move based on how much you aired up the rear shocks.
maxharvard Aug 7th, 06, 03:09 PM the front was lowered, but that hasnt changed anything.
Zdld17: The camaro tank is 18 gallons.
Unreal Aug 8th, 06, 09:06 AM I have the same problem on mine. When I was building the car, the GM sending units were on backorder. I waited about 2-3 months, in hopes of getting a GM one, but finally had to go with the repop in order to put the tank in. It reads 3/4 tank after a total fillup, and will only take 10-12 gallons when on empty. I'm told this is a common problem with the repops. I recently purchased a GM one, and will probably install it over the winter.
I seem to remember that the repop center fuel guage I used had a strip resistor with it. I sought advice, from Rick's, I think, and was told not to use it....can't remember the explanation. But maybe I need it to "match" the resistance of the new sending unit.
FastFred Aug 9th, 06, 06:18 AM Unreal I m with you on this mind is doing the same thing But what I did notice is that When I had the tank on the ground and tested it it would go to full when I raised the arm.So this winter I am going to try to bend the arm and see if this makes a difference. It did out of the car why not in the car?Go to full right now full is 3/4.
FBODY Aug 9th, 06, 06:45 PM I just emailed dii (manufacturer of the two sending units I used), we will see what they have to say. I will keep you posted.
Daniel.
zdld17 Aug 9th, 06, 07:30 PM I tried two new sending units, with similar problem, 1/8 from each other.

Daniel.
I just did this and notice my new (import) tank unit was rated for 120 ohms? Old factory was labeled 90.
Ok,, Yes my tank holds 18 gal.
FBODY Aug 10th, 06, 03:35 PM Here's the response I got from the dii Website in the Joe Parts section @
http://www.dynacorn.com/site/04home/home.html
P.S. I not sure they understood the problem, we do not need more travel, we need the sending unit to send the correct value !!!
My Question:
"Hi Joe,
I have a 1969 Camaro. I replaced the sending unit with one of your dii unit (3/8" Single Line Sending Unit). Since I installed it my gauge doesn't read properly. This is the second new dii unit I'm trying with the same problem.
The gauge only goes to 3/4 of a tank when my tank is full and when the gauge shows empty it only takes about 8 to 9 gallons of fuel to fill the tank (although the gauge reads 3/4).
Note: Prior inatalling a dii sending unit, everything was working fine and my gauge was reading correctly.
Please let me know how I can fix this problem.
Thanks, Daniel."
dii/Joe Answer:
"Sometimes the easiest way to fix this problem is to merely beend the arm with the float so the travel is more. Or, that not working, replace the sender. Either way, your local dealer should be able to help you. We will stand behind our products. Contact the dealer you got the part from and I am sure they will be more than glad to help you."
FBODY May 2nd, 07, 07:37 PM Hi BPOS & Maxharvard,
Spring is here and I just removed my Fuel Tank in order to try to fix my Fuel Gauge / Sending Unit problem.
Did you fix it on your car?
I might pickup a different Fuel Sending Unit tomorrow at NAPA. NAPA has the Spectra Premium brand which is different than the two defective ddi repros (from Classis Industries) that I tried without any success.
Thanks, Daniel.
FastFred May 3rd, 07, 07:19 AM Qk took the tank out and bent the arm like a quarter of and inch rplace the tank and filled. Now reads in the middle between full and 3/4 of a tank.So I will be taking it back out to bend it more. What I did notice is that you have to bend it up the scale of the unit to get it to read write. Not just bending the arm down more.I will try again on another pull down not right now.Let you know what happens.

I repaired my sending unit/ gas guage paroblem just to get mine to register. But mine reads as yours 3/4 is full. So that I don't miss understand on which way you bent the sending unit arm. You made the angle of the arm less and not bending it more to make the angle greater, right?
FBODY May 4th, 07, 04:22 PM I insalled the the Spectra Premium Sending Unit P/N FG104C (3/8 Single Line) last night.
Put back the approx 4 gallons in the tank and it read about 1/4, went to the gas station to fill it up (at 1.14 $CDN a liter) and the Gauge Read Full (instead of 3/4 as with the two previous new ddi sending units that I installed).
It seems like my problem is fixed !!!!!
Good Luck, Daniel.
ckaram May 4th, 07, 04:29 PM May be too late for some but when I had the new tank installed I read the horror stories on the re-pop senders and I had them reuse the original sender. Just replaced the sock/filter and cleaned it up. Works great.
