Hello I saw a 1969 Z-28 Rallysport on ebay like a week ago the guy said his car was so special because it had a paint delete code and he said that meant the car was ordered in black because chevrolet didnt make Z-28's in black you had to special order them. Why couldnt you get a Z-28 in black who cares what color it came in so what iam asking is what exactly did paint delete mean? And also I had heard before that paint delete meant that the car sometimes came without stripes and he had said that is completely wrong so if someone could help me out and answer my question I would appreciate it thanks Tommy

First of all.....the statement that you couldn't get a '69 Z in black is complete crap. Paint code 10 (Tuxedo Black) was available on all 1969 Camaros.

Paint delete means that either the car came without the std. striping (ie- A Z without any stripes) or that the car was painted a non-standard color (a color from another body style or line).

Black was not offered at intro but could be special ordered. Hi-Perf Cars did an editorial on their difficulty in ordering a black 69 L78 car w/o D90 stripe. They got black with the stripes and took them off themselves. From intro to about Jan 69 black cars had - - paint codes. Around that time black became an extra-cost RPO color. Black cars then had 10-10 paint codes; I've seen a bunch.

- - really means special painting instructions. This can be anything from no stripes to a non-Chevy color. I know of a LeMans blue/no vinyl Z/28 built with black stripes; - - paint code.

The Z/28 in question was probably built without stripes or it wasn't black. The first line on the window sticker will be 1001** SPECIAL PAINT. Exactly what was special isn't stated but they did charge for non-RPO colors. Stripe delete seems to be n/c. Since color isn't listed it he can claim whatever he wants.
