I own a 67 convertible with only lap belts in the back seat. I had no problem putting my daughter in the back when she was smaller. All I had to do is strap the car seat to the lap belts and put the shoulder harness from the car seat around her...But, now that she is bigger and getting too big for the seat, I could only put her in the back seat with the lap belt...which I'm sure the police would frown upon. Has anyone else experienced this problem with their convertibles with lap belts

The police won't frown upon it unless your state mandates shoulder belts for kids. There are alot of people still driving kids around in cars with out shoulder restraints. When I get my cars going, I'll be one of them.

There would be alot of work to do to put shoulder restraints in back I think.

Most states require booster seats up to a certain weight/age. Go online to your states SOS or DMV website and check the requirements.

Yep. Booster seat and your available lap belt is the way to go. Can't fault you for what wasn't originally there.

Yup. They don't want to get sued when the lap belt only kills the kid. I'd rather wear no belt than a lap belt.

As I understand it, that may be a bad seat belt angle. From all I have read/been told, a belt can’t angle back down like that, because on impact it can compress the spine. Although I will add the caveat that I have always been told this as it related to a harness, not a 3-point – the physics may be different because the belt is only on one side. Like when the ricer guy installs them using the rear seat bolts or a cage cross bar that is too low.

Yes I saw the belt ... I am little soft hearted on this Ford,,, 67-68 Mustangs expecially fastback GT's are my favorites. Sorry. And if it had a shotgun motor in it,,, uh well , what can I say?

This is the reply I got from the Dept. of transportation/highway safety:

You asked if it is okay to restrain your daughter only with a vehicle’s lap belt. You also said that your daughter is 6 years old, weighs about 57 pounds and 47.5 inches tall. The agency recommends that children over 40 pounds and ages 4 to 8 be restrained with belt positioning booster seats, unless they are 57 inches tall and above. The agency also recommends that belt positioning booster seats must be used with vehicle’s lap and shoulder belt system. Therefore, the answer is no - it is not safe to restrain your daughter in a booster seat only with a vehicle’s lap belt. However, there are child seats with internal harnesses on the market that are recommended by the child restraint manufacturers to be used only with vehicle’s lap belt system. Please check with your local retailer for the appropriate child seats. Thank you very much for your interest in vehicle safety.

My position is this: Children from that era seemed to survive just fine with what was there. Before that, many cars had no belts at all. I don't discount the safety record of seatbelts, but the cops frowning on original equipment being used as it was intended is a non-issue as I see it.
