View Full Version : dome light
RJBaileyrn Aug 4th, 06, 04:54 PM Hi all. need a bit of help. I recently bought a 69 coupe with new headliner and NO dome light. I can feel the wires up there and apparently, the guy that installed the headliner just left bare wires up there, because if I touch the headliner there, I see sparks of all things. Lucky the whole car didn't burn up, or at least the headliner.
I have the new dome light, but I need to cut the headliner to install the light. I can't find a diagram of the top to know exactly where to make the cut. Anybody have a picture, diagram, or measurements to help me cut in the right place. Don't want to screw up the headliner.
Thanks,
RJ
nashcar Aug 4th, 06, 05:42 PM I have a roof on ebay that shows pictures of the inside, maybe it will show you what you need. #260014576160.
RJBaileyrn Aug 4th, 06, 05:53 PM I can't see enough detail to see where the light attaches, but thanks anyway.

nashcar Aug 4th, 06, 07:32 PM I measured the center where the light attaches; 29 1/4" from the base of the rearview mirror back and 24" from the driver side sheetmetal lip that is covered by the plastic windlace. This is the center between two screws which I assume are the mounts for the light base. Let me know if you need more, I may be able to get you a better picture in the morning.
Steptoe Aug 5th, 06, 04:32 PM Disconect the battery
locate the dome screw holes with a pin...these are offset a little..u will see this on the light base.
With a razor blade cut a cross in the area keeping cuts inside the outter edges of the light base...cut smaller rather than larger.
Using a pirce of wire u cab hook the wire ends. When doing this be very carefull, it is easy to rip the hood liner as it is under tension.
Do not be suprised if the wires are too short...at the best of times they are just long enough plus a little bit...If they had broken off the orginal light it will be tight.
Often when pulling thru the get caught jammed in the framing sructure of the roof and to free them is not accessable.
The only way I got mine thru enough (and to add extra length was to drop the 2 steel supports either side, remove outter trim and peel back where the edges of the liner where glued...even then it was a fiddly job.
madmax87 Aug 5th, 06, 05:19 PM If worse come to worse and you don't feel comfortable cutting your liner, you can always disconnect the light from the harness. The wires run up along the drivers side rear window up into the roof. Anyway, here a pic of the location. Don't have the exact measurements right now.

RJBaileyrn Aug 7th, 06, 04:11 PM found the wires and clips but don't see any screw holes. Are they supposed to be in that square channel type stuff that runs down the center of the roof> HELPPPPPPP

madmax87 Aug 7th, 06, 05:00 PM I just took those today from my 3rd 69 project. It's a little too hot out here still to be working on the car. The car is completely stripped so if you need some pics of something, just let me know.
RJBaileyrn Aug 7th, 06, 05:13 PM Will do and thanks. I tried to find the right sight to install the dome light but I think I was a bit too far forward. Trying to do it by feel didn't work too well
Unreal Aug 8th, 06, 09:24 AM When I had my new headliner installed, one of the seams was directly over a screw hole. I knew if I screwed it in, I would run the risk of cutting a thread, and having the seam unravel. I ended up using only one screw. If someone bangs into the bezel, it will twist, but for the most part it is not a problem. I started to drill an alternate hole, but decided against it.
RJBaileyrn Aug 8th, 06, 10:41 AM There must be some difference in headliners. I was worried about that too, but after locating the screws, the seam doesn't appear to be an issue. Thanks

South Side Goons & Hitmen Aug 8th, 06, 10:55 AM Does anyone have pics of how a rear frame rail (namely the passenger side) is supposed to fit along the body. On the 1969 Camaro I just bought it looks like they replaced, cut and patched the rear frame rails. This car has really been amateurly done from the doors on back. Any pics of the frame rails would help. I would like to see how they really are supposed to look like without the butcher job.
Any pics of the rear wheel housings would help too. They butchered those. Why put brand new full quarter panels on and not replace the wheel housings and do the frame rails right? Now I know why some people really get frustrated by the butcher owners. Money is one thing, we all know that. But why replace full quarters and not wheel housings? What's worse is they spent more time riveting in sheet metal where the holes in the wheel housings were than they would have spent in replacing the wheel housings.
Sorry for the rant. Any pics of rear frame rails and wheel housings would be appreciated.
Thanks!!
Thanks!!
