I recently reinstalled the door panels on my 68 with a standard interior(not sure if this is related, probabaly not). I closed the door and now it is stuck closed. The lock mechanism doesn't seem to be fully disengaging when I pull up and down on the lock knob and push the inside door handle,or try to unlock the door from the outside. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Get a flashlight, a piece of coat hanger about 18" long and block out about 2 hours for some real fun. Bend a "J" hook on the end of the coat hanger and after you have rolled the window down as far as it will go, slide the coat hanger down to the lock mechanism. Have a friend operate the door handle to identify the lock linkage and pull on it with the coat hanger in the direction the linkage is pulling. If this fails, remove the seat, remove the trim panel and go from the inside of the door. Have fun.

I don't think I would do the coathanger thing, too easy to scratch stuff up. Just pull the door panel back off and look to see if a rod is bent or binding.
Toby: Why would you remove the seat? I have a 67, but cant see that it would be that different to remove the seat to get the door panel off?

Hmmm...That's a good question. Anyone ever try to remove a door panel on a closed door? Is it possible on a 68?

I had the same problem on my 69. I rolled the window down and got a piece of flat bar stock similiar to a slim jim. I shinned a flash light into the door and pulled on the lock a little to make it move so I knew where is was. Once I knew exactly where it was I placed the bar stock directly over the lock and slid the lever to the open position. May take a while, but I got it on the first shot.

If you can get inside from the other door, you can remove the door panel. There is a hole in the locking mechanism where you can remove the door striker, it may take a large allen socket similar to the one used on G.M. brakes. You will need a long extention. It is a real pain I just did it the other day. Shine the flashlight right where the door striker is and you will see what I mean.

Here is an old post. I was able to pry down through the window slot when the small rod from the outer door button was gone:

Sometimes if the inner mechanism where door handle attaches has a weak spring, all you have to do is shove the inner handle down to its normal resting position and then the other door latch buttom will start working.
