After a bit of a break, I am getting ready to start reassembling the subframe and suspension....

I would like to paint the firewall and cowl area (under the vented cover) a semigloss black

Kicking around Eastwood underhood black, Krylon rust tough semigloss black, or Rustoleum 7777..

Just wondering what kind of prep is necessary..
Grinded a lot of cowl rust away (still more to go).
Firewall is in decent shape...looks like it had been painted before..

Any feedback on rust neutralizers, prep and paint is appreciated...

Here are some recent pics...
Stupid rust

damn car looks like it been in the weather for quite awhile.
I would definatly concider media blasting that rusted area.
sanding will remove most rust but also good metal aswell.
I glass beaded my frame and soda blasted all body parts.
paint will come out flawless.
spent the extra money to media blast and youll be happier in the long run.

oh boy...

First off, glad you're back!

subframe fixed up now?

That rust is icky... gonna have to go. Best tool is a 3m striiping wheel for big areas, wire cup for lil ones. The seam looks ratty too, the sealer will hafta come out, rust removed, and resealed.

What's the "non-original" peice of sheetmetal screwed to the pass. side of the cowl?

Scott, I would definately get the windshield out and take a really close look at the cowl. Looks as if there is lots of rust under that lower windshield trim. I would media blast it too, reseal everything after repairs then paint.

Jim, that is a cowl vent flap for the air conditioning. That is a a/c car. The suitcase has been modified.

Did you guys see the second page of his pics where he has removed alot of the rust? I would definately use POR 15 on this application and at the very least remove the windshield moulding to inspect the lip that the glass sits in. IMO if you aren't going to blast it, then I wouldn't use anything less than POR. If you media blast it then a good epoxy primer and the topcoat of your choice.

Scott,
I'm right there with ya, I just took the subfame off today and pressure washed it. I'm gonna disassemble it tomorrow as sand blast. How does that media blast stuff work? Can I use the same equipment as I am going to use on the frame?

I would go along with Scot (67CMC) I would get that windshield out and unfortunately your not going to like what you find. I would media blast it as that is the only way to truly see what your dealing with.

Keep up the hard work!

HI, Yes I too would take out the windshield before you go any further. I'm affraid the metal underneath the windshield is probably gone.
Are your front floors rusted thats a good way to tell how bad that windshield cowl area is?
Mine didnt even look as bad as your but when I took the windshield out it was another story.
Good luck and keep up the good work.

Hey...thanks for all the feedback...
Looks like the general consensus is to pull the glass and blast her and/or POR

Floor pans are pretty shot, as is the cowl area...

Unfortunately, I need to push the motor install along....shop where I am storing it needs the room...

Hmm...maybe i'll just paint just the firewall, move forward with the subframe/motor install then do a boodlefoof-subframe-rollout ;) and address the cowl...alot of extra work , I know, but what can you do

Was planning on addressing body stuff next

Hey Jim...glad to be back...freakin work is getting in the way....
Subframe all fixed and p-coated - really happy with it!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but you may have pitted the windshield already but let's hope not. It has to come out anyway and the car will need a new upper cowl-dash panel that sits below the windshield. Can you store the motor somewhere else until you finish the rusted areas?

Hey Toby:
The more news the better (altho I'd rather have good news :( )

Lemme ask this....
WHat is entailed with having the area blasted?

Can it be locally blasted, without effecting other (finished) areas?
I could get the car rollable again and tow it to a local place, but my frame and front end pieces are already done..

Not sure how much time I can put the motor storage guy off and it's a lil too tight in my garage..

I'll also follow up with my powdercoater guy...he has a pretty big blasting facility.....

Thanks,
Scott

I'm pretty sure, from the pics I've seen you can probably do the cowl section and firewall by hand. Meaning wire brush etc. Because I have a feeling you'll be doing more cutting than cleaning under that windshield.
I say this cuase thats how I did mine. The cowl area is pretty small and flat, and the firewall is in pretty good shape. You probably wont have to take the entire firewall to bare metal just the heavy surface rust areas.
If time and space is the factor it can be done with the sub back in place its just a little more uncomfortable.
Frame looks great though!
