View Full Version : Axial play?

The rear wheels on my 69 camaro seem to have some axial play (in the direction of the axle), about 3mm (1/8 inch). Is this normal? The bearings are not that old.

The axle is a 8.75 positraction.

Thoughts?
Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Yes, This has been recently discussed somewhere.

I forget if it's here or over on Team Chevelle? I think it's here tho....

Yes as in "yes this is normal" or yes as in "yes, this has been discussed somewhere"?

I could not find it.

Yes, an 1/8" is OK.

And I have asked Big Gear Head, (BGH - I'm terrible at names and I think your's is Freddie?), in a separate thread to chime in here to help you more b/c I flat lost track of the link to the thread I mentioned.

Sorry for not being a better communicator. My bad..

if you're talking about "in and out" as in you can push / pull the axle in and out 1/8", that's ok, just.

If you're talking "Wobble" as in when you rotate the wheel, it wobbles 1/8" in and out, I'd say that is not ok, and you got a bad wheel or bent axle.

It is probably from clutch wear. As the clutches in the posi wear they allow the axle gears to move farther out, which creates more end play in the axles. A new set of clutches, set up correctly, will probably take it out.

Just remember, axial results may vary....

Okay, thanks sofar for the info.
I will look for that other thread on shimming the play out.

And yes, it is only "in and out"
