View Full Version : Did I just waste my time with POR?

Hey all,

I've been prepping the subframe for the past couple weeks so I could paint it POR-15. This would be my first time using it (black). I blasted it, smoothed most of the welds and got rid of ALL the weld splatter, then sanded it. Talk about going way overboard for a car that's gonna be driven as much as possible.
Well, After I Marine Cleaned it, I went to town brushing the POR on and I'm AMAZED how glossy it turned out. Looks awesome. It dried in under 2 hours.
Now my problem.... I did 1 coat on the whole frame then ran out of POR! Can I just do another coat or should I scuff it with 320 grit or something before the second coat?

Thanks...
You can see some prep pics at the very bottom of my page. I'll have more pics posted soon.

I'm surprised it dried that quickly. However, I've had good luck second coating the next day. I think the directions that gave test results commented on a much longer time between coats.

Me too Rick! When I was done I went out an hour later just to check on it and did the "finger drag" and it was dry! 2 hours later there was no drag! This stuff REALLY loves humidity.

HSJ,glad to here that the frame rails turned out so good. Hope I have the same results this winter when I do mine.

Darn, darn... double darn! My local POR supplier won't have any glass-black in stock for a week!!
Get it from Restomotive and wait 5 days or wait a week and get it locally for the same price??
AARRGGHH!! I can't believe I ran out!!

67camss/rs, good luck with yours. I used the foam brushs which worked quite well. You can really make the stuff go a long way. But I went through a handfull of them because they kept getting eaten up by the frame even though I had it sanded. Make sure you have at least 6 or 8 to start. I only had 4 so I had to use them until they ripped. And they seemed to leave tiny particles in the POR which p*ssed me off. I may lightly sand a small spot before I do the second coat and see how it turns out.
Oh, and like everyone says, this stuff doesn NOT come off when it's dry! I wore gloves but no long sleeves and my arm looks like it's been in a 30 year old oil pan.
If I do more POR painting this Winter when the air is real dry, I'm going to run a humidifier in the shop before I get started. Like I said, this stuff LOVES humidity.

Joe,
It could be worse, I'm at the exact same spot you are, frame is out of the car and did the POR-15 thing this weekend. The worst part is I managed to get it inside my gloves and so I look like some kind of freak with it dried on my hands. I guess it's a good thing I'm a maintenace manager for a steel mill, so it isn't out of the ordinary to have something all over my hands. Just order some more and keep on going!

I found that if you get some on your skin, that if you get to it pretty quickly with that orange hand cleaner stuff it comes off fairly well but not if you let it dry on your skin for a while.

OK, there's a couple new pictures at the very bottom of my HobbyStage page of the subframe after 1 coat of POR gloss-black.

I'm sorry for the poor quality. I'm using a very old Kodak unit. Very poor detail at best. I'll borrow a better camera for the final round of internet space-wasting pictures.

Scott,

I know what you mean about the freak-show bit. No matter how hard I try I end up with a POR tattoo.

Do you work at Sparrows Point?

Not trying to jump in here, but I ordered the six pack kit and used 2 cans.

CarlC, yes, I work for Bethlehem Steel at Sparrows Point. Hope they don't file Chapter 7 before I finish the project.

*** hanging head ****

I started with the starter kit. Yes I know... dumb.
I got anxious to see how it went on and started one night. Before I knew it I had almost the whole thing done and still had some left! So I finished off the can. I bought the starter kit just to do the lower windshield area not really knowing how far the 4 oz. can would go. I let my impatience get the better of me AGAIN. It's like pouring a glass of Capt. Morgan to wet your wistle and finishing off the bottle!

I went over an area last night with 500grit just to knock down the tiny pimples before I do the second coat. I can't beleive I'm wasting so much time on the subframe, but a buddy has my welder so I have to do something while I'm waiting.

If you get it on you just use a rag and some carburator cleaner come right off.Even if it dries!

Joe,
I know what you mean about a lot going a long way. I had some left over from doing the inside floors so I decided to see what it would look like on the frame, so just painted way. When I went to sandblast the frame it took forever to get the POR-15 off that section. Don't put this stuff on anything unless you are finished doing everything to that piece.
I like your idea about Captian Morgan..Hope I don't get it mixed up with the carb cleaner as I try to get this stuff off me.

I'm not worried about UV damage since I don't plan on the car ever getting upside down so the sun can shine on the frame.

Evan if by some freak chance that it does get UV damage, which would be years from now, I'll just paint it again.
