All,

On a '69 Z/28 how do you know which is the drivers side of the transmission crossmember. One side has more holes. Is it common for those crossmembers to be hard to get out because they are tight between the frame rails and the floor pan? Thanks.

Doug,

If you put the car up on jackstands on the front end, as far forward as possible and loosen the two most rearward subframe bolts the subframe will drop enough to make getting the crossmember in/out very easy.

If your subframe bushings are old and squashed,, you will have a hard time with this. I have always removed and installed the flat crossmember at an angle, one side first then the other will slip in . Passenger side first in the most forward position then the driver side from the end of the crossmember near the emergency brake cable ..

I think all small block crossmmebers from 67-69 were the same, Z or not...

The end with the extra holes goes goes on the drivers side, the holes (which were for mounting the muncie shifter in 67-68) face forward.

Even with new bushings these crossmembers can be hard to remove mostly because of floor sag. You can lift the floor slightly with a floor jack and a piece of 4X4 carefully placed to avoid dents. Also you can tell which way the cross member goes in by looking at the area where the transmission mount goes. It will be stamped so it's tilted upward toward the engine.
