I have a chance to purchase a 700r4, it's in running condition, not sure about mileage or age, pretty sure it wasnt' hammered or anything. Just wondering what a fair price range would be for one in this condition.

Thanks, James.

I just recently got one from an '87 3/4-ton PU at the the Pick-N-Pull in Stockton, CA for under $200.
I've paid anywhere from $100 to $350 for them depending on what came with them and what shape they were in.
I would imagine it depends mainly on how commonly available they are in your area. The less number of wrecked or donor vehicles around the higher I usually see the prices going.

Make sure you get everything with it or you will be spending alot of time and money tracking down little odds and ends.
If you have a choice, look for a post '86 version - they seem to live longer.
If you plan on putting any above stock horsepower through it, then plan on having to overhaul a stock set up unit sooner than later - no matter what shape it was in when you got it...

Hope some of this helps;
John

Personally, I would recommend not spending more than 300 for the unit. 700's are pretty pricey to replace / repair. As previously mentioned, I would also invest in a good overhaul too. 400 - 500 for the tune-up and 300 bucks = 800.... Initially it sounds good to me!

I personally know some good tranny guys who build them starting @ 500 bucks and up. they can get pricey!

Thanks guys, I live in HI. so pretty sure there's not as much of them as the mainland floating around. Had a chance to buy a late 80s firebird but didnt' want to deal with the whole car.

I'll try to get more info on the trans i'm looking at now.

Thanks again,
James.

There are companies out there that sell the turn key 700r4 , This way you wont be dealing with overhauling and changing servos and valve bodies to make it shift right. Some have the non computer with lock up convertor if you do cruising. TPI, TCI, etc

I paid $800.00 for mine, it had about 1000 miles on it since a rebuild and also came with a drive shaft and 2 converters. It was by far the most significant change I have made to my '68 camaro. You will love it and with gas prices what they are you will also appreciate the MPG boost.
