: Have points Dist. Want to replace, Choices?
ray moore Aug 8th, 06, 05:45 PM I have a 68 BB 396 with stock points and Dist and coil. I want to replace the points with something more maintenance free and dependable. I can't really afford or want to go with a $400 or more MSD setup.
I really like to keep the more stock look but am looking for an alternative to the points. I heard there is a drop in replacement for the points. Something that will take a little hotter coil would not be bad either.
What should I be looking for? Does anyone have anything they are using and are satisfied? I think I am looking for reliabilty and smoother idle rather than a performance boost.
Thanks for any advice or opinions
Ray
67 Plain Jane Aug 8th, 06, 07:30 PM I have used a pertronics ign. in my 67 for 5 yrs with no trouble at all. I think it was about 80-90 bucks, can't really remember. Of course my eng. is stock and i don't need the big $$$ system. Just my 2 cents.

That's really the route I'm looking to go. did you replace the whole dist or just modify the original ? How about the coil ?
Thanks
Ray
ace's68 Aug 9th, 06, 05:24 AM pertronix h.e.i is good its 219 bucks, accel is good, summit makes some affordable good distributors, y not just replace the points and whatnot with the ignitorII kit by pertronix?
madmax87 Aug 9th, 06, 10:40 AM If your current distributor is tired and in need of rebuild, I just installed the Pertronix Flamethrower D100700 dist and 45011 coil. The dist is the stock looking cap and stock looking coil. Best price I found was at Car Shop Inc. 309-797-4188. Total of both was $232.00 and that was with shipping. Very happy with the unit.
www.davessmallbodyheis.com many here are running them...
jr68 Aug 9th, 06, 11:20 AM Ray , I just put a Pertronix ignitor kit in my stock distributer , it was an extremely easy job considering Ive never done it before. I also got the Pertronix flame thrower 40,000 volt coil , looks identical to stock.
The Ignitor cost less than $80 and the coil was like $40.
Farm Boy Aug 9th, 06, 11:43 AM I installed a Petronix Ignitor #1181 in my 67’s distributor a couple of months ago and am very pleased with it. From the outside it looks stock except there are two wires running out of the distributor instead of only the one wire with points. The unit is designed to use a stock coil and resistor wire so no other modifications are needed.
The installation requires removal and shimming of the distributor in addition to mounting the module where the points were, and magnet trigger ring under the rotor. One wire connects to the coil just like the wire from the points. The other wire needs a full 12 volts when the ignition is on to power the module. I connected the power wire to the ignition (IGN) terminal on the fuse block. The entire job took less than an hour and cost only $75.
ray moore Aug 9th, 06, 04:35 PM Thanks for all the replies. It looks like the Pertronix is way to go. Right now may main choice are the Ignitor kits or the D100700 and 45011 coil.
I am looking over the ignitor kits and dist/Coil's that are offered on the Summit web page.
If I can swing a couple hundred bucks the new dist and coil sound appealing. Either way it's an improvment. At least now I have a direction to go. Looking forward to getting either choice installed.
Thanks again
Ray
67 Plain Jane Aug 9th, 06, 08:25 PM Ray,
Sorry, i forgot to say i used just the igniter and not the whole dist. because i found a new GM one on ebay a while back and put the pertronics unit in it.

ironcross Aug 10th, 06, 09:38 AM A very good choice is a GM HEI from a 1975. You dont need those high dollar racing junk pieces. Not very expensive and a simple plug in to the engine. Other years have more wires to mess with and the 75 is the simplest. One of these helps my 454 LS7 powered 68 to 11.20-11.40`s at 120+. If it wasn`t any good, I wouldn`t have it in my engine.
