Lukes67 Mar 26th, 01, 04:15 PM jeff, weve done it a couple of times but not on a early camaro.i beleave it would be easier than putting a quarter panel on.just make sure the back and front glass opening is the same after your done.trial fit several times.also i would check for chrome fit befor final weld......Luke
Toby Keen Mar 27th, 01, 12:18 AM Jeff,
It's a pretty straight forward project with very few hidden details if you can weld. Replacing it with either a new panel or a used one is relatively easy if you think it through first.
Like the first response said, measure it several times first, vertically, horizontally and diagonally in the window openings and make sure it is square in the interior of the car as well and you should be OK.
68SS396 Mar 27th, 01, 02:42 AM Jeff, what does $775 get you. Is that the price to buy it and have it shipped to you or is that the price they gave to do the job for you. If its just the price of the roof its a little high to me. Living in Hawaii I hope most of that is shipping.
ragtopman Mar 27th, 01, 04:47 AM If $775. included the freight, possibly, but if not, thats way to high. I see them on e-bay every great once in awhile for $200.. There was a guy in Pa. that was looking for one, and I had a nice roof, and I told him $200. and he turned it down(oh well).

HawaiianCamaro Mar 27th, 01, 05:25 AM &&% is what Jimmys Bowtie shows one for on the web site. was hoping to get a response back from them by now but no luck. Not sure if that price (775) included the crating and shippng
Ragtopman you still have the one you were trying to sell??? http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif

HawaiianCamaro Mar 27th, 01, 05:27 AM sorry **& should be 775
Racer#00 Mar 27th, 01, 05:54 AM I'm getting ready to do this on my 67. Some A@@hole before me cut a sunroof in the car.
I posted this same question back in December. I bought a roof from a guy on this board for $100.00. It is not rust free, but will work. The way they explained the job to me was to clean out the drip rails, find the spot welds and drill them out. Then drill out the spot welds in the windshield frames. Depending on where the donor roof ends is where you'll cut the sail panel and front pillars. From there you should be able to just peel the top of the roof off. Just like everyone else said, make sure to trial fit the glass and check the windshield openings.
BTW $700.00 sounds about right for a rust free one. I'm sure that's around what Mobile tools spent for his. I'll try to post pictures going through the process when I finally do start. Good Luck!!

mobiletools Mar 27th, 01, 03:30 PM Racer #00 how are you doing? did you buy the roof from me?
I hope it made it ok. Your decription is how Jimmy at Hill side Auto Body did my roof.
If you or HawaiianCamaro have some questions I could ask Jim for you.
Roofs range all different prices.
100-300 for ones that need work.
300-500 for clean ones
1000 for NOS. One was in CA. I just missed that one by 1/2 hr.
775 for one that is primed sounds a bit high(without sh.) My question would be what's under the primer? I bought 2 roofs then bought a 68 for parts hoping the roof was ok. I finally found one the 4th time. It was funny my cellar looked like a roof wharehouse at one point. All the roofs looked good with paint on them but when I had them bead blasted it was a different story. I could have used a couple of the roofs I had but I was getting very picky.
Jeff, Another ave you can also take is a 1st gen bird has the same roof. Mine is from a 69 T-A. I could give you a list of places that you could try. It's been a year since I was looking and you might be able to find one in the 3-500 range. It might help for the sh. costs. If you can get one that is clean with no filler under the primer and sh. to you for 775.00 I'd go for it.
Best of luck and let me know how you make out.

HawaiianCamaro Mar 27th, 01, 09:52 PM Any address that i can search would help out greatly. witht eh salt water and moist conditions here in Hawaii http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif a roof in any condition that could be used would and is very hard to come by. the roof thats on it now to me would be a waste of time to patch and fix. think the odds would be against me in doing so. Was thinking of the Firebird route but their even more scare here.
address for roofs anyone????

ragtopman Mar 28th, 01, 04:59 AM No, its gone along time ago(I knew I should of cut it off). IMO, for that kind of money(775)that roof had better be ultra nice.

HawaiianCamaro Mar 28th, 01, 05:37 AM the Camaro Lovers on this site are great. I might have some of the best weather but the Camaro family beats that hands down.
Racer#00 Mar 29th, 01, 10:05 AM Bob, yeah I bought the roof from you back in Dec. Sorry I didn't post sooner. I will be doing the roof soon. My car is gutted and in pieces. I've been taking pictures. I need to go out and join Photopoint and post some of them.
HawaiianCamaro, I feel for you. Replacing the roof is no small task. The body man I've got doing it wants 30 hours. Plus I'm spending twice the amount I thought to finish this car
Someone on this board posted this saying and it couldn't be more true. "My car is like an onion, the more I peel, the worse I cry" http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif

HawaiianCamaro Mar 29th, 01, 02:24 PM Might be alot of work but i still think its the way to go, I dont want to think about having to go back and repairing a area that might come back to bite me in the A## later. I have lady luck on my side my wife is 100% behind me on the Camaro Restor and she has a cousin who has been welding here in the Navy Shipyard for 25 years so a case or two of beer and i can get my sheet metal work done. And working on base at the Base Supply section allows me to have parts shipped (at my cost) to a commerical address.
tell the truth i look forward to the roof operation

I got their # from an add at Carlisle PA., I bought a B/B A/C housing from them last year.
I'll have my secretary get all the #'s that could help you tomorrow.
Now this sounds like a good trip. A "Dual Cruise".
Take a boat cruise to Hawaii, with your car in the boat, and then cruise the Island. Now that's a trip. http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif

mobiletools Mar 30th, 01, 02:34 PM Racer#00. I know how you feel but keep in mind the finished product.
My body man had 207 hrs. hanging all the NOS metal and the roof and painting the car. At 40.00 an hr. it added up but it came out awesome. These restoration guys are Artists, unreal what they can do. Then it was assembly time back at my garage. Send a pic of your car my way I'd love to see it.
Jeff you can try these places.
The site sponser Ground Up. 1-516-248-4567. I've bought items for my car there and they are very helpful. They even had the 502 emblems which no one else had.
I've been to the wharehouse and it's mostly new items but you never know. I see their trailer at the swap meets alot. April 8th is the Staffod Speed way Swap meet and they will be there.

He even had the full metal dash. I drove 522 miles to his wharehouse in Ohio to pick up the whole exterior from him. I didn't trust Yellow Tr. with all the metal.
If you need other #'s let me know I have a ton of them. I've replaced just about every part on this car. The doors, firewall, rockers, floor and subframes, pass. glass, A/C controls and the w/s wipers are original. The rest is GM NOS or GM new. I didn't like the Repo Metal.
Maybe you'll get lucky.

HawaiianCamaro Apr 2nd, 01, 10:48 AM yhanks as always for all the help. Ill let you know what and where i come up with a roof and the price i get it for. Its the shipping thats gonna kill me but its still better than having to have to redone the work at a later date.

Jeff
Cut the top where the original welds are,and your window measurements will be within tolerance. Also make sure the car is level and supported, front to rear.Because of the unibody. It`s not that hard if you take your time and MEASURE!
HawaiianCamaro Apr 5th, 01, 03:16 PM As always thanks for all the help from thses pages, I will be doing the roof project after i have all the new front end sheetmetal and doors installed. fig it would be easiest that way. so that will mean the roof will be done around the June time frame if all the other parts get here in time. looks like i will bust my 4th of July date to have it painted and back on the road, but oh well best to do it right than over;--
again thanks to everyone

On another note Jimmiy's Bowtie never did reply back to Phone calls/e-mail or Fax requests for the same products.

JWA Apr 10th, 01, 09:05 PM I bought one of Bob's(mobiletools) roofs for my camaro which has a sunroof. It is still crated up. Guess what, a buddy of mine scored a 69 parts car and it has a great roof. I get it and the newer gas tank for helping with the R-N-R of the M-21 in a 67 SSRS. If your deal does not pan out drop me an email at jeffa@chevelles.com . Good Luck
