View Full Version : Matching Engine Numbers 67 Camaro
smiller Aug 11th, 06, 08:22 PM Is there a source on this site that can help me understand how to determine if engine and chassis of a 67 Camaro are "Matching Numbers", or what determines "matching numbers" ?
From what I have found the vin# and engine# only tell me the engine is a V8, 327, 210HP, 2 barrel in a Northridge built V8 automatic.
I just bought this car, plan to upgrade the engine HP and dont want to discard the original if it is valuable.
Many thanks from a novice

For 1967, only the higher HP engines got the VIN stamping on the block. The base 327/210 wouldn't get this (although there are some that did), so the only way to tell if this is your "born with" engine is to line up the date codes and verify the two digit engine code stamped on the block in front of the head on the passengers side. Post all the numbers you can find, including your VIN and the Trim Tag (pictures are best), and we should be able to figure it out for you.
Oh yeah, also post the numbers from the transmission and rear end as well...

Many thanks for your reply. I dont have the car yet, it is being shipped to me so all I have for now is the vin #124377N182896 and an engine number VO222ME. I will try to get the trim tag, rear end and transmission numbers and let you know when I do. This is my first hobby car and so I really appreciate your expertise and willingness to help

Your engine code and date match up well with your VIN. Your car began the assembly process in mid February, 1967. The engine date of 0222 indicates it was assembled on February 22nd, 1967 and the "ME" is the correct code for a 327/210 with Powerglide and no smog.
Looks good so far...

smiller Aug 14th, 06, 12:01 AM Jonesy, being an expert on z28's can answer what may be a dumb question, but in 67 did the z28 use a 327 block or a 283 block with a 327 crank or either? If it is possible to clone my 327 into a z28 engine spec I would.
Thanks
Steve Miller
Jonesy Aug 14th, 06, 05:39 AM Not sure if I would call myself an expert on 67 z/28's, but they used 327 block with 283 crank.

Steve,
The trans is not original in the car (in 2001 a TH350 was installed), but I would like to see the axle code though.
smiller Aug 15th, 06, 02:25 PM Ed,
attached is a picture of the firewall tag. The rear end is a 10 bolt BP0226, and firewall tag reads ST67-12437 NOR, TR 741-Z 83029 BODY W 3D R-R PAINT
Many thanks again,
Steve
bertfam Aug 15th, 06, 05:41 PM Steve,
No picture attached but BP0226 shows a 2.73 10 bolt assembled on February 26th, so that also lines up nicely with your car. Your interior code of 741-Z indicates a Red Standard interior and your options of W and 3D show Tinted Windshield and the Auxiliary Lighting Group. Your R-R paint codes is for Bolero Red.
I would say (with the exception of the transmission that Daniel stated was replaced in 2001) the car is pretty much as it left the factory.
Congratulations and enjoy...

Kurt S Aug 15th, 06, 09:13 PM You'd be nuts to put a 302 crank in the car. You'd lose displacement and torque. The LT1 350 was a stronger motor than the 302, due to more cc's.
Other changes could be made to gain easy power.....
67ss350camaro Aug 16th, 06, 08:04 AM BP0226 shows a 2.73 10 bolt assembled
Not for a 67. For 67 the BP axle is a 3.08 10 bolt.
bertfam Aug 16th, 06, 08:39 AM OOPS! Seems I can't go straight across on the line!! Thanks Dan...
