: gas tanks?
Rookobird Sep 9th, 02, 04:12 AM Does anyone have any experience with replica gas tanks vs. GM tanks? Ineed to replace the tank on my 69 and wondered which one to get. The replicas are about half the price and seem to be American made.
Thanks,
John
gheatly Sep 9th, 02, 06:08 AM The the USA or Canadian made tank. They are much better. I bought mine from FIrewheel and it was made in Canada. It fit in well. However, the filler neck placement is a little high.
RickD Sep 9th, 02, 06:21 AM I too bought a canadian made repro. Got it from Rick's. Very nice piece but mine is also a little high at the filler neck. Not a problem though.

gheatly Sep 9th, 02, 09:26 AM It's only a problem when you have to fill up using those huge smog pump nozzles that vacuum out gas fumes. Those only fit sideways between the filler neck and bumper.
RickD Sep 9th, 02, 10:28 AM Haven't run into them! However, I put some small rubber blocks on top of mine to space it down an inch.

toycarlvr@aol.com Sep 9th, 02, 12:22 PM I bought a repro from Classic's that was advertised to have been USA made. When I got it... it says "made in China". I'm not too concerned about how it looks... but the piece of poop is made so crudely that I've cut on hands on the edges of the metal. I guess they don't spend the time to de-burr or break the sharp edges. Now I'm afraid if I file them down... it'll start to rust. Hum... I wish I bought the GM piece.
drew69 Sep 9th, 02, 02:36 PM I too bought the repo from Rick's and it was made in Canada for my 69'. Also installed the 3/8" fuel sending unit for more HP down the road. Very happy with the fit and finish. Should last another 33 years, then it will be somebody elses turn to worry about it. Hopefully my son who is soon to be 21 http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif

Tom Weaver Sep 10th, 02, 02:36 AM The 125-130 price range you are paying for tanks all come from the same vendor. If you are spending about $240 or so, it is the GM unit that is made in Canada. The guy who had the unground seem tank, must have gotton a bad tank. I have sold many of these and have never had a complaint or one returned. As Rick D. stated, sometimes you might have to shim it a bit. Oh, bye the way. Hello from the middle East. I'll be here for a bit and can't wait to come back home!!!
Rookobird Sep 10th, 02, 04:40 AM Thanks guys. I think I'll get the replica model from Rick's. What about painting the tanks? Would Por 15 work or is there something better?
John
gheatly Sep 10th, 02, 06:57 AM The tank will have a light layer of oil on it to prevent rust. Clean that off real good before you paint it. I used a can of Krylon flat clear.
RickD Sep 10th, 02, 09:28 AM I clear coated mine too, but with POR15 Glisten PC.
