View Full Version : patial vin
RJBaileyrn Aug 12th, 06, 04:46 PM my 69 coupe doesn't have a partial VIN on the front of the right cylinder head. It just has the engine code stuff. There is a partial vIN on my Muncie 4-speed. I couldn't find a partial VIN by the oil filter, but hard for me to see there. Is it possible to have the partial VIN only on the tranny?

clwilcox33 Aug 12th, 06, 04:48 PM Which engine? The lower performance V8s usually didn't get the partial VIN stamped on them, though some did.
RJBaileyrn Aug 12th, 06, 05:15 PM the engine that is in it now has WJ engine code, it is blue in color, and certainly not original.

clwilcox33 Aug 12th, 06, 05:44 PM You mean the paint on the engine isn't original I assume? Or is the engine not original? I'm no good with engine codes as I've never researched them. Was this an SS car? 327? 6 cyl. car originally? For that matter, what year model are we talking about here?
Edit: Just remembered your other thread where you asked about a 69 coupe and mentioned the car doesn't have the original engine in it... It won't have a partial VIN on it..that matches your car at least. Remember not all blocks got a VIN stamp on it.
RJBaileyrn Aug 12th, 06, 06:13 PM that was sorta my question, though not worded well. I thought all the engines had the partial VIN somewhere on them, now I know better. Would you know if Chevy trucks engines were blue? I thought maybe this was a truck engine originally, and it looks like this engine was always blue
elcamino Aug 12th, 06, 07:05 PM From 1968 up they were supposed to be stamped on the engine, trans, body and frame per federal mandates.
The one on the rough surface by the oil filter can be extremely difficult to see. Some are stamped so lightly only hot tanking can reveal it. I have seen some that required a magnifying glass to make out.
RJBaileyrn Aug 18th, 06, 12:54 PM I looked by my oil filter on my 69, didn't see zip. Guess I'll try the magnifying glass.

clwilcox33 Aug 18th, 06, 04:14 PM I had a brain fart, I'm used to thinking of 67s, sorry. elcamino is right about 68 and up. The 67s didn't always have the partial VIN on the blocks.

non option engines that is, optional performance engines always got coded because they had a high theft probility. If its hi perf and no CON VIN, you have to assume its not the original engine. Someone could have bought it at the parts counter or acquired it somewhere (theft is possible) and installed it long time ago. Common for owners to want to hot rod thier cars back in those days.
JohnZ Aug 18th, 06, 06:13 PM The "WJ" suffix was used for a '69 truck 350/255hp Powerglide, but Chevrolet didn't start painting engines blue until 1977, and suffixes went to three characters in 1970.
RJBaileyrn Aug 21st, 06, 07:20 AM That's what I came up with too for the engine. Wonder why somebody painted it this ugly blue, haha. Well it has the 4-bolt main block, casting number 3932386, so I guess I'll stick with it for new aluminum heads, hydraulic roller, new intake and carb.
Thanks for all the info guys.
