I bought a 72 camaro RS, and it had 18 inch wheels in the front with 235/40 tires.

I put new american racing torque thrust wheels instead, 17 by 8 in the front and back, 245/45 tires.

The problem is that the front tires rub,the car seems to have lowering springs because it is sitting very low.

I decided to change them to 17" by 7 with 235/45 tires for the front wheels, hoping to solve the rubbing problem, however the tires still rub.

I don't know what specs the wheel store used for the wheels.
any ideas about the wheel offset i need to have in order to solve the rubbing problem, I appreciate it guys..

Tires that rub are always very frustrating. The first thing I would do is measure the vehicle ride height and compare it with factory specs. If the car sits lower due to lower springs even 235/45/17 tires will rub. I have never owned a 2nd gen Camaro. I probably should have bought a 1970Z28 for the same price I paid for a 1969 X44 Camaro. I've had 2 first gen and 2 third gen.

Check the vehcile ride height first. You can have a repair shop do this by putting the car on an alignment rack or you may be able to do this yourself on a nice, flat, smooth and straight surface. Then go from there. This is much cheaper than paying for tires & wheels that will rub and then possibly not being able to return them.

Where and when do they rub?
If they rub the fender lip at the top when you hit a bump, you need more backspace.

I have to get a new set of stock front springs in order to get rid of rubbing problem at the fender lip .Besides, that would prevent from dragging the headers since they are sitting too low.
