I need to do fix some rust areas around my windshield channel and was wondering how to cut/grind some of these tight areas.

I was using my die grinder...which was working well...but the little, cheap grinding stones last about 2 minutes.

I was thinking about getting some of those carbide bits that people use to port cylinder heads. Where's a good source to find these?

Or is there a better tool or suggestion? A lot of areas I need to work on are a little tight for the 4.5 grinding wheel smile.gif

Thanks!
Jason

The carbide bits would work good. Look for a set of them, they come with different styles, long and narrow also with a sharp pointed one. Make sure and put a couple layers of 2" masking tape along the outside edge and cover the windshield with cardboard to protect it from grinder spray which can nick the glass. I also take a piece of sheet metal about 8" x 8" with a 3/4" bend on it and lay it over the edge to protect in case the bit jumps. Sure beats replaceing the glass, which for best results and saftey should be taken out. Also the 3" cutoff wheels work good too. Just be CAREFUL!! Also watch the speed of the diegrinder, adust the air pressure up to the point it does what you want, but is still easy to control graemlins/thumbsup.gif .

I bought my carbides from Eastwood. Good selection. Just be careful as sometimes they'll 'bite' into the metal and jump on you.

Jason, unless you are cutting out the rusted metal, you would be better off spot(sand) blasting the area.
The grinder will not reach down to the bottom of the pits leaving some rust. The small blasters are easy to work with, and you can precisely control the blast.
