I'm new to this forum but have enjoyed reading your comments for a while. I just started my next project which is a 69 Z 28 X77D80. This is the first Camaro I've done, all the others have been SS chevelles. I hope I don't bore anyone with stupid questions but I have 2 questions for now. 1-When I removed the rear seat there was a chalked X7 on the upper body seat brace, any ideas? and the second ? is the $10000 one. This car was originally a 61 dark brown color not a very popular color and for very good reason. You hate it or love it. I'm a purist and want to make it stock but by doing so and not painting it the resale red, am I hurting my investment? Also can anyone tell me just how rare it is? I have to say after stripping the cortes silver off and seeing the origianal br with the Z white stripe I like it but then again I own a butternut yellow SS Chevelle. Give me your 2 cents worth,Thanks

The X7 behind the seat further proves the authenticity of it being a true X77 car.

As for the color, not particularly one of my favorites, but I would go back with it being a true Z and all.

Just my opinion, and I wouldn't even say it, except he ASKED, but......... I have always thought burnshed brown was just plain ugly. Kinda like a really dark pile of dog....(well, you get the picture). And on most 69's it really is ugly. However, on a Z, with the huge white stripes for contrast, it doesn't look half bad.

2.2% of the 69's came in burnished brown.

No offense to any of you guys with sharp BB cars.

You're not going to hurt the value of a real Z by changing the color from burnished brown to hugger orange or daytona yellow. If you plan to keep the car then paint it what ever color you want, if you plan to sell it then paint it red.

I would agree with the others - changing the color from Burnish Brown to another original '69 color in this case, probably would not hurt the resale value. In fact, painting it Burnish Brown may hurt the resale value more.

With that, I've seen some pretty impressive restored burnish brown cars - unusual and respectable, but not for everyone.

If the tag says 61, that's the color I'd paint it. I know it's not the most popular color, but don't you ever get tired of seeing orange, yellow, silver, and red cars? No offense to these colors as I like them too, but I hate to see them on cars that aren't coded for them. I don't think brown will hurt the value. In today's global market. I'm sure there are at least a couple of people out there looking for a 61 car. If you ever sell it, try to get as much exposure as possible. The more bidders there are, the higher the $$. A year ago or so, there was a nice '69 Burnish Brown RS Z for sale in the NW. All #'s match car w/documentation (LA car w/buildsheet) Had some pretty good bids, but apparently was a no-sale. It was relisted about 6 month later and the owner changed the color to black.

I thought it looked decent in brown, and tend to perfer cars all original, but ...

I was not to fond of green but after talking to KevinW the purest, I went with the tag color of 57 57 and the color has grown on me. Go with the tag. How many 61's are out there?

Garnet red/no vinyl or black vinyl top would have black stripes.

Only way to get white stripes would have been parchment vinyl top.

And Garnet w/ black stripes is a killer combination

I'd go with hugger orange or another popular color.

Here's my thinking based on a dilemma I had with my ride.

My Dusk Blue X33D80 was not born as an original RS, had no console, and also sported a flat hood. Its has the center fuel gauge and tach. Now, would it make sense for me to restore to all "original",or should I bring it back as an RS with cowl hood, and full gauges? I wrestled for a few days, and then the decision came.:clonk: While not "original" the car could have been an RS, and could have had the cowl hood and console. Originality is great,but I tend to think in terms of resale as well. That burnished brown car takes a special buyer at resale time. If you plan to keep the car and hand it down to family members, great, but as others have said, I think it hurts the value.

Do this test, and be as objective as you can-

Picture 10 restored Z's in your mind- Orange,Yellow,Dusk Blue,Black,Red,Rallye Green,Garnet,Silver, Fathom Green,Gold and Burnished Brown. If you had to pick 2 of them to keep,which colors would you choose? How about 4 of them? Would burnished brown be in the mix of chosen cars? For me, it would not be. Black-1,Orange-2,Dusk Blue-3Yellow-4,Rallye Green-5.


Just opinions of course. At the end of the day,its your car, and you should do what YOU want; but if resale is a concern, I'd seriously consider avoiding the brown, which it sounds like you are gonna do. Well done! Red would be killer....

I would imagine that I am in the minority, but I think the color is absolutely gorgeous. just my $.02 :thumbsup:

Gotta agree with the folks that want you to keep it the brunished brown and keep it true to it's trim tag. I'm kinda one of the old purist but also agree with others that the brown is a butt ugly color without the stripes for contrast. I think that only Frost Green beats out the brown for ugly. Mine was originally Hugger Orange so it didn't present much of a delimna for me when it came to color so I stayed with the orange. I did toy with the idea of not putting the Black vinyl top back on it but glad that I did now as it gives it a nice contrast.

Well Im getting closer (2 weeks) and still did not make up my mind. I just can't help not painting it the original color 61 . I think I owe it to all of the camaro owners and the hobby that this color is also accounted for, it can't always be about the money.If and when i sell it I just will have to wait for the right person. At least i won't have to listen to all the exsperts tell me " its not painted the right color" How many 61 color codes Z are there???? What do think???

Burnished brown is not that bad when the paint is good and with the stripes its fine. Paint it the original.

Sounds like you'll never sleep if you don't paint it back to original. Some people won't like it, but then again, some people don't like hugger orange.

Garnet red is not a real popular color either. It is too dark. When you see a neat looking red 69 it is usually painted 70 Chevelle Cranberry red. Burnished brown looks real good if you put nice paint on it. Or you can fudge a little , find a late model car with a similar color that looks better and use it. I personally would paint it back to burnished brown and use the best paint I could get. The cheaper paints just seem to look crappy.

I agree with clill, The cheaper paints just dont do any colour justice. Saw a hugger orange Z next to my Z28 (orange lacquer) and the colour was nite and day, it almost looked pinkish. It seems that when they colour match or whatever to 2 stage the paint colour and quality is not there? IMO.
I kinda like the burnished brown, you never see it much.

I believe I'd go back to the orig. color too. We did change the colors in the 70s but I think as time goes on the color is'nt as much of an issue as it once was. Burnish brown finished right looks good with the white stripes.
