Hi All, thinking about upgrading to 140 amp alt. I currently have a #4 wire from the alt back to the battery in trunk. Then I run #6 wire from battery in trunk to the post on the firewall. (I run the wires back so my kill switch kills the battery an alt)
To go to 140 amp what else would I have to upgrade. The rest of the wiring in the system is stock.
Thanks

If the rest of the wiring is stock, why do you need 140 amps?

Hi, I probably don't but I figured for a few bucks more I would go a little bigger for future upgrades.
Thanks

Maybe he is planning on using the excess power to run the appliances in the house when he is tuning his motor? Seriously though go to http://www.madelectrical.com/ and do some reading. You may be interested in this kit also http://www.madelectrical.com/catalog/tm-1.shtml along with a remote starter solenoid. Also the #6 wire for the battery is too small, but this is covered in the links above.

I haven't looked at the mad stuff in a while, but... The alternator will never be asked to put a 100 amps into the battery, rarely over 20 amps. If it does, you need a new battery or you been running your stereo at a picnic too long!
The car draws it's power from the horn relay buss, that's where you need your 14 volts.
If you need to run the output to the trunk for your disconnect, be sure to use a 3 wire alternator and connect the voltage sensing wire to the horn relay buss. That way, you'll have 14 volts there regardless of any voltage drop in that 35 feet of cable to the trunk and back.
