: car movie - Dazed and confused 'melba toast'
Hank Williams Jr. Aug 17th, 06, 12:36 PM I posted this seperate from the other car movie thread for a bit more exposure to a particula question i have always had. In the movie dazed and confused. Mathew McCon- plays a character "wooderson'
Wooderson drives a Big Block Chevelle and loves high school girls. One thing I have always wondered is Wooderson rfers to his chevelle affectionately as "melba toast'
Quote "let me tell ya what Melba Toast is packing...edelbrock intake, pop up pistons.."
I owned a Big Block 70 while in High school a few years back..I have always wondered on the 'melba toast' thing. Anybody have any suggestions? is this soemthing from the 70's i am totally not aware of?
SEK Z28 Aug 17th, 06, 01:29 PM I just saw that movie and had a real laugh.
Wooderson: "that's what I like about these high school girls - I get older and they stay the same age"
I have no idea about the melba toast thing either, so don't feel alone. Maybe someone here can clue us in!
Timmo99 Aug 17th, 06, 02:23 PM I believe that he is trying to tell us that his car is a sleeper.
joesw2 Aug 17th, 06, 06:27 PM Well the car was black if that corralates to anything, remember he called the 74T/A 'white lightning'...
BonzoHansen Aug 17th, 06, 08:12 PM WOODERSON: Let me tell you what Melba Toast is packing right here. I've got four-eleven positrack out back. Seven-fifty double pumper. Edelbrock intake, bored over thirty, eleven to one pop up pistons. Turbo jet, three ninety horse power. We're talking some ****ing muscle.

Actually, that was Clint who calls his car white lightning. Wooderson's car was a real BB car, the T/A was not a real super duty.
Hank Williams Jr. Aug 17th, 06, 09:02 PM Bonzo - that is great!
Melba Toast would destoy clints poncho in a drag.

http://www.dazed-and-confused.net/cars.html Boy i dont believe everything in that link, O'bannions Duster is a 73, and its a automatic (he neutral slammed it in movie) and the hoodscoop is a factory type, also the hp rating would be 235. Also i think that Elco is a 77? GM didnt come out with squre lights untill then ? right
kz1000ltd Aug 18th, 06, 02:40 PM Awesome movie, highly recommended!!!!!!!!
Hank Williams Jr. Aug 18th, 06, 04:47 PM I believe that he is trying to tell us that his car is a sleeper.
I think that might be it too huh? I have never had melba toast - but I gather its a little simple and plain or unassuming or something?
I dont know why a 70 BBC chevelle would be a sleeper...but maybe it was plain, compared to some of the jazzed up stuff of the 70's like Clints Poncho?
JIM68 Aug 19th, 06, 07:30 PM Melba toast is made by lightly toasting bread in the normal way. Once the outsides of the bread are slightly firm, it is removed from the toaster and then each slice is cut in half "longitudinally" with a bread knife to make two slices each half the thickness. These two thin slices are then toasted again to make Melba Toast.

I think he's refering to the SS stripes on the hood

69X11 Aug 19th, 06, 07:44 PM I don't know about melba toast beating the T/A though." You goat get some shoes on that thing, those are pizza cutters." The sweetest car in the movie thought is Pickford's GTO. Here's a question for ya all though. During the girls hazing scene, did anyone else notice the 73 T/A in the background with the 3rd generation Camaro wheels on it? You have to look close. It's red. That was some forward thinking in 1976.
Hank Williams Jr. Aug 19th, 06, 07:53 PM Good call on the hood stripes - that is a possibility for sure, now that i understand how to make Melba Toast.
Hell yeah Woodersons car would stomp that poncho - that thing has a smog motor in it, power is way down compared to 70 SS.
Pickfords GTO WAS friggin awesome.
Hank Williams Jr. Aug 19th, 06, 07:54 PM Okay okay, but which girl from the movie is the hottest?
Im kinda thinking Jodi...Mitch's older sister..but need a repeat view to be sure..

Simmone
Hank Williams Jr. Aug 19th, 06, 09:42 PM She has that wild squeaky voice. I bet she'd be a real tramp in the sac.
elviskitch Aug 20th, 06, 06:30 PM Melba toast is eaten with soup.
Wooderson calls his Chevelle Melba Toast because it soaks up the competition.
ZZMike Aug 20th, 06, 07:00 PM Yep, Elvis has it right. It is called Melba Toast because it soaks up the competition...
Good Job!!!
Hank Williams Jr. Aug 20th, 06, 08:35 PM That is good. Seriously though, I applaud the script writer, that is a clever little name to come up with - rather than something boring like 'hell on wheels' or 'black beauty'
soaks up the competition, I love it.
melbatoast Aug 5th, 10, 08:28 PM the 1970 chevelle ss 454 "melba toast" got the name because it is said to "soak up the competition"

did you just find this 4 year old thread because you were just watching the movie on cable and did a google search?
oh, and welcome...
Canadian cruzer Aug 5th, 10, 11:50 PM A 4 year old thread would put it @ 2006, not a '93 thread, the year before i got my license. I think you pre-dating the internet it self.....

this thread is from '06.. the movie came out in '93 or '94.
i saw Dazed and Confused was on cable and watched a few minutes of it before flipping it to something else, then i came here and saw that someone had made their first post here to talk about Melba Toast...
ace's68 Aug 6th, 10, 03:42 AM Great movie, was filmed the next town over from where I live. A friends 72 chevelle is in the movie, and he played as an extra. Pretty neat watching it at recognizing the spots, especially since it's a car movie filled with tons of babes, and cars.
Matthew Mcconaughey is such a pedo in that movie... lol.
Out of all the ridiculous car movies out today, that movie holds the best for actual raw car footage imho, no bs NAWSS etc...
