Hi, done with the 3 week wiring job. Anyway the final test...voltage measured with a volt meter is as follows.(1 wire 100 amp alt)

At Idle (Electric Fans and Fuel pump running.)

14.4 Volts on Pass side connections on the fire wall
13.8 At the Horn Relay
and 13.77 at the terminal on the fuse block the feeds the HEI.

Although not the Ideal 14.2 Are these results acceptable at Idle?

(Waiting for my buddy to get home so I can have him help me test at higher RPM)
Thanks
chris

the numbers are ok, tho you have a lot of voltage drop thru all that wire.

If you had a 3 wire alternator, the voltage sense wire at the horn relay would bring the voltage there up to 14.2 or so, which would help.

HI Jim thanks for the reply....My powermaster can be wired as 3 pretty easy...maybe I'll try that.

Since I have no external voltage regulator on the car how would I run the two wires.

I think I could jump the power wire to the Big post on the alternator. Where would I run the other wire?

Thanks
Chris

The sense wire should be hooked up to an IGN sourced voltage. However, if you have a single terminal "IGN" ignition switch, you'll have to add a diode to the sense wire of the new alt. This will kill the alt when the ignition switch is turned off and the engine, or ignition system will die along with the off selection at the ignition switch.

In other words, without adding anything else to the charging system, the alt will continue to supply ignition power and the engine will keep running after the ignition switch is turned off. Not good.

Back to the alternator hookup, RED wire to BAT post, the sense wire as discussed, and the third wire/connection is for the brown wire going to the "GEN" light.

I believe what I wrote is correct. If not, I hope others here educate me and you as well. A member using the board name of undee72, has the schematic of hookup and a search would probably find it. Or ask him to e-mail it to you.

There is an article in the electrical basics sticky detailing the wiring hookup for a 3 wire internal reg with remote voltage sense. Unfortunately the graphic showing the schematic's link is broken. You should be able to pick it up from the text. It is as Everett described.

Hi All, Thanks for the replys. Reading were very unstable with the Summit one wire alternator my best was 13.8 At the Horn Relay with voltage drop when the rpm's went down. Kept all wiring the same and upgraded to a Powermaster one-wire 100 amp alternator...I think it was 50 bucks more than the summit. Now getting a rock solid 14.4 at the horn relay and 14.2 at the fuse pannel even at low rpm.

I gues you get what you pay for.
