Located what appears to be a 69 SS396 (possibly 375hp) Camaro but am not an SS expert and need some help, suggestions, advice.
The car is black and the paint appears to be mostly original. It comes with a non original 402 that is not in the car. The car never had a console, has standard interior, is a Norway car built in May and has (D80 on the trim tag) the rear spoiler.

Things appear to say that it is an SS396 are
It says X66 on the trim tag
It has the big block heater core
It has a 12 bolt posi rear end
It is a 4 speed car
It has power front disc brakes
It has a big block radiator
Has cowl hood (optional on SS I am told)
It has a single large fuel line (Holley equipted 375 hp?)

Things that say it may not be an SS396 are
It does not have a tachometer which I thought all SS’s had?
The white hockey stripe is solid and is not broken above and below the 396 emblems on the front fenders but may have been repainted, it’s hard to tell.
The SS emblems on the fenders are black (not white) and look like they may have been put on or changed at some time although it does have correct appearing SS emblems on the rear and grille
It does not have chrome louvers on the sides but does have drip rail and fenderwell chrome (thought SS’s all had the louvers?)

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated…

Alot of things coud be changed over time. An X66 car shouldn't have chrome mouldings in the wheel wells and on the drip rail. It may well have been added in the last 37 years. It should have chrome louvers but maybe the rear quarters were replaced.
If you have a picture of the trim tag then post it in the trim tag forum for a people to have a look at. I don't believe that the car had to have a tach. The stripe should be split and the emblems should be white.
It sounds like it may well be an SS 396 car but it needs a good looking over to be sure in this day and age of clones. Does it have a functional cowl hood? Does it have the throttle lever for a cowl hood. Look for vin on the trans. and date code on the rear if they are supposedly original? Do they match the cars trim tag build date? Does it have the frame rail bracket for dual exhaust?

By the way it's Norwood not Norway.

I wouldn't worry too much about the color of the SS emblems...they should be white, but could have been changed for some reason. However, I would look carefully at all other clues for SS and particularly b/b.
Do a search for all the stuff....there's lots of info already written. The dual exhaust hanger reinforcement is one.

Unfortunately, if someone wants to fake all the clues, they can pretty much be sucessful.
However, often, some of them are overlooked....like the fan shroud upper bracket. I have seen more than one b/b with the s/b bracket. It's only a 6 dollar part, but sometimes overlooked.

Check the motormounts. Since the motor is not in the car, you should be able to pull the numbers off them. I have the correct ones on my b/b, but cannot remember enough detail to tell you what to look for.

As for the single fuel line, if the clips are original, they will fit snugly around the line. If they were originally s/b or L34/L35, they would have dual fuel lines. If they did not change the clips, they will be sort of oval shaped.

If it was originally a 4spd it would have the "muncie" piercing on the firewall, and the BB cross member should have an oval hole with a corner knocked off (where the bolts go through to the trans mount)

Also should have a black tail pan. If the car has not been restored it will go over the lip on the trunk side of the weather stripping.

Actually, the crossmember would be more of a rectangle with 3 rounded corners, and one diagonal corner.
The s/b cross member is more of an oval.
For clarification, the "muncie" piercing is for the speedo cable on a muncie. It is toward the center of the firewall, to the inside of the wiper motor. That would not indicate b/b vs s/b, just muncie vs other tranny. There are lots of other clues to look for to indicate possible b/b which can be found by using the search feature, in this forum.

Dan - I see a lot of contradictions and would be questioning the car just as you are. It would help the folks here help you if you could post the VIN and cowl tag numbers, or even better post a pic of the cowl tag...

You can also reference http://www.camaros.org/diffs69.shtml for more on what is required for a specific model...
