Hi:

Are there any other areas besides the machined pad on the engine block that contain the partial vin and engine code that determine when the block was made or what year or car the block is out of? I am looking at a car and the owner claims the engine is out of a 69 camaro but he is not sure if the partial vin or engine code are restams or not. Where else can I look. Is the another area where the block has casting #'s to determine if the motor is date correct

Thanks,

The block casting number is on the driver's side of the block, behind the cylinder head, on the flange where the bellhousing bolts up; the block casting date is on the other side, about six inches outboard of the distributor.

Thanks John:

From these #'s will I be able to tell what year the motor was manufactured and what type of car it was originally in?

Thx, Pete

The only way to tell the true application is to know what the stamped suffix is. Nothing else will give you 100%. The casting number and date can eliminate alot of possibilities and the vin could get you closer but other than that...

If they do not know if it is restamped get a photo and there are alot of guys here who can at worst say whether it deserves another look.

Some casting numbers were only made during specific time frames, so it may be possible to tell what year block you have.
