View Full Version : Interesting (I think, anyway) wiring nightmare: HEI and electric fuel pump.

OK... put an HEI in the 69. (454, duals carbs, low-rise, headers, etc)

Ran a wire from the "IGN" block (or whatever it's called) in the fuse block to the HEI. Worked great.

Installed electric fuel pump.

ran a wire from BAT to relay (30)
ran a wire from IGN to switch relay on, (85)
ran wire to ground (86)
ran wire to fuel pump (87)

1. Engine will not turn off unless I pull HEI wire from IGN, or it runs out of fuel by pulling fuel pump BAT wire.

2. There is now ALWAYS voltage on at IGN... even when the key is off.

3. my "generator" light stays on EXCEPT when the key is in the "on" position, engine running or not. Then it goes out. Otherwise, it is always on, regardless of the key position, even when the key is out.

4. The fuel pump properly turns on and off with the ignition switch... even though the switched wire source comes out of the IGN block, just like the distributor.

5. When in the engine start mode, sometimes the start is inconsistent... like power is pulsing to the starter... maybe a second at a time.

6. That doesn't happen when I arc the 2 contacts on the ford type solenoid I'm using... I get a solid turning over of the engine as long as the two posts are crossed.

I can assume from all of this the following: The ignition switch is toast and or the alternator has gone south.

Any takers?

If you suspect the alternator, the first thing I'd try is disconnecting the 2-wire plug on the alt. and see if it starts and shuts off properly. If that doesn't work and you have an external regulator, pull the 4-wire plug off of that and try it again.

OK... pulled the 2 wire plug, same as before except the "gen" light was brighter, even with the key off. Fuel pump worked perfectly, engine would not stop when key was put in "OFF" position, until I pulled the wire from the IGN block to the HEI.

i checked your relay wiring, it is correct.

I still think something is wrong there tho. Your test on the alternator is normal, and there was not a problem before the relay went on.

Try this:
disconnect the ignition wire from pin 85 of the relay.
Disconnect the fuel pump from pin 87, and connect it to power at either the horn relay or the battery whichever is closer.

Start the car, will it turn off?

Jim, thanks for getting back to me. I'm going to give that a try tomorrow pm and get back to you here.

In a word, no.

Is the ignition switch located at the base of the steering coilumn?

Did you do any other wiring? Sounds like you have a backfeeding problem, or the IGN switch is bad.
