I am attempying to install a new RS headlight switch into my 69 Camaro. The switch has a tang on the front mounting pad, suggesting it should be mounted in a certain orientation. It appears that the corresponding tang slot is around the 4:00 position.

The problem is this: trying to get the switch into position with the RS hoses attached is nearly impossible. Securing the switch into place without the hoses attached is possible, but later attaching the hoses is nearly impossible also.

Is the switch actually required to be orientated into a certain position?

Could the tang be removed and the switch installed wherever convenient?

Is there a trick I'm unaware of?

Thanks for any help.

Not sure about the tang but secure the vac hoses with either glue or small clamps VERY tight, leave about 12" of hose out and then after installing the switch, the hoses can be mated up with their other part that goes thru the firewall. I used ribbed plastic hose bibs from NAPA that join hose ends. Or use very small copper tubing that can slip into the hose ends. This saves getting your knuckles all bloody if those hoses were to ever slip off the switch. Ask me how I know. I dont recall the tab, maybe someone else can comment soon.

I would take out the instrument panel to access the swithch. You just have to take out about 11 screws and the 3 bolts that hold the steering column. Then disconnect the speedo cable, remove dash. The light switch and hoses are right there to replace. Doing it this way may take a little longer, but IMO will be less frustrating and you will have one less splice in your vacumn lines.
