Guys, need some troubleshooting for a "brand new" '68 RS 327. Here are the symptoms:

(i) car has recently rebuilt, original alternator; all new wiring; new battery; new starter.

(ii) car sat for a couple of months, first trip out, died a couple of blocks away.

(iii) put new battery in; next morning, new battery was dead.

(iv) checked to see if anything was "on", nothing.

(v) charged the battery back up and pulled the negative, car stopped running.

Bad alternator? Or could it be anything else? I should also mention that both of the new headlamps burned out after an hour of being on.

Thanks in advance for any help/ideas.

Sounds like a couple of things may be going on here.

Burned out headlamps sounds like too high voltage which is probably due to a regulator problem. The old mechanical regulators can be adjusted. There should be something in this forum explaining the adjustment procedure.

For a battery drain problem, disconnect the negative battery cable and install a test lamp between the negative cable and negative battery post. If there is an electrical drain, the test lamp will light up. Beware of the dome light - it will indicate a drain when the door is open. If you find a drain (other than the dome lamp) start disconnecting fuses and connectors one at a time until the lamp goes out. When you finally locate a connector or fuse that does extinguish the lamp, you will have narrowed your drain down to a single circuit. Be sure to include the alternator connections in your test. Shorted alternator diodes is a common problem which will drain the battery.

Use a volt meter to do a basic health check on your electrical system. Measure the voltage at the battery terminals. A charged battery should read about 12.5 volts or slightly higher. During crank, the voltage should stay above 10 volts. Once the car starts running, the voltage should increase to 13.2 to 13.8 volts.
