I am putting in a new GM383 and bought a GM serpentine drive system to go with it. I know we will have to do away with the generator and voltage regulator but does anyone know of or have a wiring diagram to hook up the new way?

This link http://www.camaros.net/techref/electrical/Charging_System/NewFirstGenCharging.htm should get you going, but last I checked, the link to the picture was broken. We'd have to get Jim M. to look into that so you'd have a schematic to go by.

I went from a 327, V belts, and an ext reg alternator to a 383, March Serpentine system, and a CS130 one-wire alternator. If you're really cleaning up your engine compartment, I would recommend reading all you can from this site. I went with the whole engine rewire: the headlight relays, 1 wire alternator conversion, and the remote solenoid. Check it out.

If u look at the above diagaram...
The white wire is connected to red...this is to enable 12v to the feild coils to 'activate' them
A direct loop from the batt feed..red wire, nut on the back of the alternator to the feed terminal does the same thing with less connections to go wrong.
So u dont need to use the white wire.
Blue wire goes on the other bayonet

I am really confused now. I have a 1-wire SI type battery with the black rubber plug over the 1-2 terminals. I called American Autowire and the tech told me this. He said disconnect the voltage regulator and tape up the ends. Remove the blue and white wire from the alternator and tape up. Leave the red wire plug into the rear of the alternator. The tech said this is all you have to do.

With the one wire, that IS all you have to do.

With a 3 wire internal reg, you can wire either as Steptoe said or as Undee and dnult posted.

The blue field wire is ACTUALLY the systems voltage sensing wire, it would attach to the point in the system that you want to regulate. (ie: hold at a particular voltage)

This could be the red terminal on the alternator as steptoe said, or somewhere else as dnult and undee posted.

The original system sensed the voltage at the horn relay.

On the SI alternator, if I place a toggle switch in series with the white wire, and turn off the toggle switch, does it kill the alternator?

Does the existing schematic allow engine run-on if ignition switch is turned off?

In every conversion pic I have, the blue is used as the turn on or excite wire, the white is used as the sense wire, although the blue and white wires can be reversed at both ends (alternator and VR) and it will still work. In reality, the wire color doesn't make a difference, as long as it is wired correctly.

I didn't mean to hijack this thread but thanks for the info. So the diagram shows the install for a 3-wire SI alternator not a 1-wire SI alternator.

yer right greg, i got my colors backwards!
