: Drilling holes
mbrown Aug 31st, 06, 05:06 PM To All,
today I was talking to a speed shop about having my bushing pressed out so I can have my control arms powder coated. In the conversation the speed shop guy said I should get new control arms, or have his shop drill some new holes in the frame for better handling. Can some one tell me where the holes would be drilled or is this a bad idea altogether? Cause if this a good mod to have done I would like to do it while the frame is out and sitting. I dont want to buy new control arms will kill my budget.
TIA
Marcus
HwyStarJoe Aug 31st, 06, 05:27 PM What he meant by drilling new holes in the frame is called the Guldstrand modification.
The mounting holes for the upper control arm cross shafts are drilled in such a manner as to change the geometry of the alignment.
Instead of simply drilling new mounting holes for the upper arms, the upper control arm mounting flanges where these holes are can be removed from the frame, cut to certain dimensions and re-welded to the frame in a different location which does the same thing.
Or you can buy tubular upper control arms from different manufacturers which also does the same thing.
If you do a search on 'guldstrand mod', you'll come up with a million threads about it. Many people have done it (including myself). Check out Mr. Pozzi's website for a ton of information on what they were talking about.

There are definite benefits.
Here is the rest of his page on First Gen suspension..... http://www.pozziracing.com/first_gen_suspension.htm
mbrown Aug 31st, 06, 09:14 PM Sweet, just what I was asking for and more. Looks like this is something I can do myself and keep the upper control arm.. Thanks so much you just saved me $$$.
davidpozzi Aug 31st, 06, 09:43 PM Be very careful when drilling the holes, the drill can wander so start small, and verify that the center to center dimension is exactly correct to fit your control arm shaft holes.
mbrown Aug 31st, 06, 10:04 PM Okay will do. I notice your website only had the LH side template. I guess I would just flip it over for the RH one.
davidpozzi Aug 31st, 06, 10:55 PM Yes, just put the template in from the back side where the bolt heads are. I have a downloadable magazine article of the Guldstrand mod on my page too.
