It was working great earlier today when I was replacing the top...then a puff of smoke. Now it only goes up...not down...any suggestions?

Sounds to me like its your power top switch. They go out A L L the time if you use them very much & if they are after market switches. Take the the switch out of the little housing. Turn it around & it will make the top go the other direction. I went though so many after market switches at $25.00 a pop I stopped buying them. I converted the wire harness & switch over to an old power window switch & mounted the power window (now power top) switch in the glove box. Its worked flawlessly ever since. If its not the switch, it might be the connection where the wire harness plugs into the little motor harness. I've had that happen before too in the past.
